General Responsibilities
The HCC Admissions and Advising is hiring Academic Advisors to work onsite in Columbia, MD to support student success. Provides academic advising to prospective and current students, including placement test interpretations and assistance with enrollment procedures. Provides academic advising to students regarding program planning, course scheduling, graduation clearance, and transfer policies. Assist students with developing an academic plan which leads to degree completion while meeting transfer goals.
Work Performed
- Provides academic and transfer advising to currently enrolled students regarding program planning, course scheduling, and transfer policies.
- Provide specialized advising to students seeking admission to competitive and limited enrollment programs or who are completing specialized transfer programs such as the AAT, ASE and others.
- Provide comprehensive advising to students in academic jeopardy and developmental students.
- Refers students to appropriate college services.
- Assists with the coordination of advisor training and the development of training materials for faculty and appropriate staff, particularly advising manuals, the advising portal and related electronic and hard copy resources.
- Assists with the coordination of special programs and projects, such as information sessions of all kinds, transfer fairs and programs.
- Serves as a liaison between the office of admissions and advising and various instructional divisions and pathways and student services offices.
- Interprets college policies and procedures for students, faculty, and staff.
- Responds to all forms of inquiry, including in-person, telephone, written, on-line and others.
- Develops electronic and hard copy informational materials for faculty, staff, and students.
- Develops and implements on-line processes related to individual and office responsibilities.
- Acquires and updates knowledge by attending workshops, conferences, meetings, and other professional development opportunities.
- Completes and submits reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Bachelor’s degree in, social science, student development, education or related field required and three years’ experience in higher education. Master’s degree preferred.
- Prior, advising, student services or counseling experience required, including experience with diverse populations.
- Extensive knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations related to advising, transfer, and general education strongly preferred.
- Excellent oral (including public speaking), writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills required. Knowledge of student information systems, document imaging and communications management systems.
- Other computer literacy required; experience with Windows’, MS Office, student self-service modules, ARTSYS, and[VV1] other software applications strongly preferred.
- Experience with diverse and special populations is strongly preferred such as students with disabilities and speakers of other languages.
- Experience working with various college departments required.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and manage multiple and changing priorities in a fast paced environment while providing excellent customer service.
