JOB SUMMARY:

Preventative maintenance and repair on heavy-duty equipment. Troubleshoots problems and performs minor repairs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Works primarily on diesel engines, fuel injection, transmissions, electrical components, suspensions, and cooling and hydraulic systems.

• Follows a predetermined preventive maintenance program.
• Performs all trailer repairs including repairs to doors/gates/hatches, brake lights, air systems, hoses, landing gear, roofs, panels, etc.
• Performs inspections of brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings and other important parts.
• Utilizes handheld computers to assist in diagnosing problems and adjusting engine functions.

• Utilizes a variety of power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes and grinding machines, welding and flame-cutting equipment and jacks and hoists. Utilizes a variety of hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches.
• Prepares necessary records pertaining to work performed.
• Keeps shop clean and orderly and observes safety practices.
• Hooks/unhooks various commercial vehicle combinations, manually lowers and raises landing gear, operates the fifth wheel release lever, opens and closes cargo doors, climbs into and out of vehicles, fuels vehicles and checks engine and coolant levels as necessary.
• Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Hands on experience preferred.
• Must be able to read, write and speak the English language.
• Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations.
• Knowledge of heavy-duty mechanical equipment maintenance.
• Working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems.
• Knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving inspections preferred

• Must possess a standard variety of hand tools, including but not limited to: screwdrivers, pliers & vice grips, wrenches (open/box/adjustable) ratchets, socket sets, impacts, hammers, punches etc. – all in various sizes
• State certifications in Gasoline Engines, Diesel Engines, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension & Steering, Electrical & Electronic Systems and Heating & Air Conditioning preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Standing for extended periods, using hands and fingers, and reaching at waist level, above the shoulders, and below waist level.
• Viewing and focusing on small print, small parts and computer screens.
• Occasionally required to stoop, bend, lift moderate to heavy weight, and climb.
• Must be able to spend up to 50% of the day standing and up to 30% of the day walking on surfaces such as concrete, wood and metal, which may be slippery and wet.
• May occasionally carry items varying in size and shape and weighing 1 lb. to 75 lbs.
• Standing or lying-in awkward positions to repair vehicles and equipment.
• Use of office equipment including computers, telephones, and calculators.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Work is performed in a well-lit, heated and ventilated area, however; drafts and noises are common.
• Works a standard 40-hour week, however, may be required to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as necessary.
• Work environment may be greasy and dirty.
• May perform on-call duties as necessary.
