REPORTS TO: Aquatics Director and/or Assistant Aquatics Director
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Lifeguards will be a professional staff member under the supervision of the Aquatics Director and/or
Assistant Aquatics Director and will work with the Aquatics Coordinator, instructors, lifeguards and swim coaches as needed. Lifeguards will help with the organization of programs and projects, and will work with the Aquatics Director to enlist and train volunteers. Must be willing to obtain and/or keep all certifications necessary for this position current.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Schedule Awareness: The lifeguard should understand and uphold the pool schedule, so he/she can pass this information on to misinformed members. The pool schedules are posted on the pool wall, a copy at the lifeguard stand and copies can be picked up at the front desk or natatorium. Attend monthly scheduled In-Service and safety meetings. Failure to attend 9 of the
12 annually scheduled meetings will affect eligibility for pay increases and may result in termination.
2. Arriving Procedures: Lifeguards must arrive on duty no later than 10 minutes prior to his/her shift. Keys can be picked up at the front desk for opening shifts. Before going on duty he/she should check all rescue/first aid equipment (refill as needed). Do not unlock pool doors until all opening procedures have been completed. Properly fill out opening safety check list, turn on all lights and document all chemical readings.
3. Departing Procedures: Last guards on duty make sure safety check list filled out properly and signed, all equipment is put away properly, all doors locked (includes lobby door, locker doors and doors on South side of aquatic facility), deck is clean, all lane ropes in pool (unless sweeper is to be put in), turn off east and west wall lights, center lights left on, all first aid kits filled.
4. Schedules: You alone are responsible for finding a replacement or trading shifts. If at any time a lifeguard cannot attend his/her shift; he/she needs to refer to the lifeguard phone list. Try to give your replacement plenty of advance notice before rescheduling. Only when a replacement cannot be found do you need to call the Assistant Aquatic Director, then the Aquatic Director.
For days off please refer to calendar in lifeguard closet. No more than three lifeguards per day may be off at a time.
5. Personal Attire: The lifeguard must wear a one piece bathing suit, lifeguard shirt (provided by
Aquatic Director), whistle and rescue tube. First aid kit/fanny pack must be on hand at all times

while on duty. Wear shoes or sandals and appropriate dress at all times while in the YMCA facility (other than pool). All lifeguards are allowed to have their drink in a sealable cup on deck
(no food allowed).
6. Swim Requirements: When time allows, he/she must practice their swimming/rescue skills and swim their required 500 yards per week (log in the lifeguard notebook). Surprise drills will be preformed weekly.
7. Assigned Stations: NEVER LEAVE THE POOL UNATTENDED!! Lifeguards must be at their designated areas of each pool when on duty. If you are not seated, the lifeguard must be standing and patrolling the immediate pool area where he/she is assigned and all swimmers can be seen. Lifeguard breaks of 5 minutes per guard per hour are permitted as needed. Clear the small pools, leave lap pool open. Guards take a break one at a time no more that a total of 10 min.
8. Maintenance: The lifeguard is responsible for keeping the pool area clean, trash picked up, empty trash can, washing the deck, deck obstruction free, clean all stainless steel, windows, tiles
(in water), keep lifeguard stand clutter free, organize equipment behind wall, keep storage cabinet clean/organized. Put vacuum in lap pool on scheduled nights and clean vacuum filter before each use.
9. Pool Check Lists: The lifeguard is responsible for keeping a patron count, pool chemical readings, water temperature, air temperature, safety checklist (opening and closing), cleaning checklist and recording them on the proper forms daily.
10. Accident Procedures: The lifeguard should be knowledgeable of all emergency procedures and
Lifeguard/CPR rescues set forth by the Aquatic Department. He/she should understand exactly what to do in any given emergency situation. Accident/Incident reports should be filled out no matter how serious the accident/incident.
11. Patron Swim Rules: During recreational/open/family swim, non swimmers are only allowed to wear USCG approved PFD in the pool. Parents/Guardians are not allowed to leave children under the age of 9 in the aquatic facility unattended, unless swim test has been passed.
Children under the age of 3 must be hands on with an adult in swim attire, at all times. Children
3 to 6 years of age must be hands on with an adult (in swim attire) at all times. Children 6 to 9 years of age must have an adult in the aquatic facility at all times, unless they pass our swim test. Each participant must swim (front crawl) the length of the lap pool for an orange wrist band or width of the slide pool for a yellow wrist band without stopping (This means no doggy paddle, it must be a recognizable stroke). With the orange band the participant may swim in all pools and yellow wrist band the participant may swim in the slide pool and baby pool only. If a discipline problem arises, good judgment may be used to sit out or expel the person or persons from the pool. In the latter case the guard should make note of the child’s name and report it to the Aquatic Director for filing in the front office discipline file. Parent/Guardian will be called, depending on degree and/or number of infractions. Above all, lifeguards should remember that you are the example that our members see. NO HORSE PLAY will be tolerated. As a lifeguard patrons look up to you for their safety. If you are not doing your job, this can turn into an incident where you are negligent. Your job as a lifeguard is to watch patrons in the pool. If a

situation arises which do not follow our YMCA policies you will be written up. After three written complaints you will be fired. Never swim alone, no reading or homework while on duty.

5. Must be extremely organized, accurate, reliable, and diligent in meeting deadlines
6. Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
7. Confidentiality is imperative, the incumbent must be mature and discrete
QUALIFICATIONS or able to obtain:
1. Must have current American Red Cross, YMCA or equivalent certifications in Lifeguard Training,
CPR-PR/AED and First Aid
2. Minimum age must be 16 years old
3. Upon interview must be able to show all lifeguard and CPR skills.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and depth perception.

$7.50-$9.50
