GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Performs a variety of veterinary related tasks, including tracking inventory, entering medical records, cleaning, maintaining and storing of medical equipment, vaccinating and medicating animals, and assisting the Shelter Veterinarian with surgeries, health checks, and other duties. Requires the ability to work independently with little supervision while performing assigned tasks.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Employees in this class perform a variety of veterinary related tasks, data entry, cleaning, and shelter support duties. Work generally requires that employees assist the Shelter Veterinarian in all of his/her daily duties which include: Providing for the medical well-being of animals housed in the shelter; surgery; health checking animals; medical related reports; emergency call-back, as necessary; and supporting administration, sheltering and animal control staff in related needs. Employee must independently handle some day-to-day activities such as inventory control, documentation and record keeping, processing information obtained in health check exams performed on the animals, processing surgical equipment, and administering booster vaccines. Work at this level requires more self-initiative and the ability to resolve most issues by applying standard procedures. Unusual situations may be referred to others for guidance. General knowledge is required of the department related County functions, and local and state laws as they pertain to animals. Work is performed under the supervision of the Shelter Veterinarian, and is evaluated through observation, feedback and the quality and effectiveness of work completed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS

Handling of controlled substances and administration of controlled drugs for surgery and euthanasia. Assists in maintaining drug logs and preforming required drug inventories.

Assists with surgery, which includes inducing animals for surgery, monitoring animals while under general anesthesia, ensuring animals recover normally post-op, and manages staff assisting in surgery.

Serves as support for Shelter Veterinarian in daily duties including, but not limited to, intake examinations, health check examinations, surgery, administration of vaccinations, administration of prescribed medications, euthanasia, and maintains associated records.

Assists in monitoring the health of the shelter animal population, including assisting in actions that are required to prevent disease transmission to the public and among sheltered animals.

Maintains all surgery instruments, anesthesia machines, and autoclave machines. Advises Shelter Supervisor when machines need to be serviced.

Help control the flow of animals by working with the shelter supervisor, rescue coordinator, and foster coordinator to schedule animals for exams and surgery as requested.

Performs euthanasia and assists Shelter Veterinarian in training staff how to properly euthanize.

Cleaning duties as necessary to ensure the sterility of the surgical suite and pre-op room.

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES

Provides backup assistance to other roles in the department.

Required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Subject to emergency callback in the event that the Shelter Veterinarian needs assistance in preforming emergency surgery or other emergency treatments.

Subject to emergency callback in the event of a disaster or other local emergency.

Will be required to take on-call schedule as assigned.

Performs related duties as required.

RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION GUIDELINES

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of Iredell County Shelter practices and procedures.

Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.

Ability to operate office equipment such as computers, typewriter, fax, scanner, and copier.

Ability to use judgment in organizing and establishing priorities of the work assigned.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and the public.

DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must possess a High School Diploma or GED, and have one (1) year experience as a Veterinary Assistant. Graduation from Veterinary Technology Program (RVT or CVT) within two (2) years of employment is preferred, but not required.
