Job Title: Underwriter Supervisor
Department: Underwriting / Customer Service
Reports To: Executive Vice President
Classification: Exempt / Full Time
Salary: $65000- $75000 Per Year

Job Summary:

We are looking for an Underwriter Supervisor to join our growing team. The right candidate must be able to work onsite in the city of Pleasanton. This role utilizes extensive knowledge of policy coverage and loss prevention with underwriting authority to complete projects. Skills are utilized within a particular business focus and will provide supervision, guidance, technical leadership, and training to staff. Through a keen understanding of corporate and product business strategies and initiatives, this role will develop and implement appropriate solutions to departmental and customer challenges.

Requires in-depth knowledge and experience. Uses best practices and knowledge of internal and external business issues to improve processes and procedures. Uses independent judgment and authority to solve complex problems and determine the eligibility of risks of programs available. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.

Job Requirements:

Underwriting

  • Analyzes policy information and risk quality using independent judgment in accordance with program guidelines o Reviews applications for insurance coverage, and outside reports to determine if the application is acceptable for the program available o Evaluates the risk against the class of business under review o Evaluates the loss potential due to catastrophe, severity, and/or frequency
  • Manages and provides supervision to Underwriting team members
  • Develops, manages, coordinates, and executes assigned department projects to completion
  • Collaborates with appropriate internal departments and management for implementation of new/revised products and processes/procedures
  • Implements, communicates, and monitors department initiatives and processes
  • Serves as key underwriting contact and knowledge resource to staff members within and outside the department
  • Monitors and manages department operations and workflows
  • Provides training to staff members
  • Participates in program underwriting audits as assigned
  • Analyzes, tests, interprets, reports, and provides recommendations on policy management systems and functions
  • Utilizes knowledge of policy management systems to troubleshoot issues and assist in the resolution
  • Must have extensive knowledge of program guidelines and be familiar with regulations at the federal, state, and local level

Customer Service

  • Manages customer service call center to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction
  • Serves as liaison to our external call center
  • Upsells programs, products, and services using customer service techniques and product information to retain business
  • Recognizes, documents, and alerts management of trends in customer service calls
  • Develops, implements, and executes new processes and procedures related to call center protocols

Required Skills/ Abilities:

  • Ability to commute to our office in Pleasanton
  • Experience in standard underwriting practices and procedures
  • Exposure to insurance underwriting-type activities
  • Strong computing and keyboarding skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills including active listening; uses written communication skills to record inquiry information and policy activity
  • Strong analytical skills, ability to pay attention to details, and provide solutions
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion
  • Positive attitude and receptive to coaching
  • Able to work in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office applications with the ability to operate standard office equipment is required

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • High school graduate or GED preferred, college-level courses with an emphasis on business studies helpful
  • Current California Property and Casualty license
  • 10 years of experience in Personal Lines Underwriting
  • 10 years of experience in a call center environment
  • 2 years of experience in a supervisory role

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Ability to use a keyboard and sit in a stationary position for extended periods
  • Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment
