Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties for a Transportation Engineering Specialist I, II, or III:
- Assists in writing general notes, specifications and provisions.
- Attends specialized design schools.
- Learns specialized design and project development techniques.
- Performs advanced and specialized design work.
- Prepares environmental documents.
- Prepares field notes.
- Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
- Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
- Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
- Reviews work done by others for drafting and calculation errors.
Additional Duties for a Transportation Engineering Specialist II & III
- Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
- Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.
- Performs traffic engineering design work, analyzes traffic and accident data and recommends solutions for traffic
- Trains less experienced technicians.
- Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal lighting design, retaining walls and building design.
Additional Duties for a Transportation Engineering Specialist III:
- Receives project assignments, determines work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.
- May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
- Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
- Schedules, coordinates and prepares documents for public hearings.
- Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience for a Transportation Engineering Specialist I:
6 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation.
Experience for a Transportation Engineering Specialist II:
7 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation.
Experience for a Transportation Engineering Specialist III:
8 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation.
(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions for a Transportation Engineering Specialist I, II, or III:
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
- Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
- Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels;receive information by oral communication
- Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
