GENERAL FUNCTION
The Teacher I will be responsible for directing all aspects of the assigned classroom program for the YMCA Preschool Program, including but not limited to, executing the curriculum, assisting with Preschool Program events, communicating with parents and volunteers and working with the Preschool department team to provide a safe and nurturing program for children.

KNOW HOW
- Must be at least 18 years old and have a minimum two years’ experience in early childhood education or have completed requirements for the CDA certification with one year experience in early childhood education.
- Must have a knowledge of children ages 2-6 and an understanding of their needs and development.
- Specific knowledge in preschool curriculum, specifically age-appropriate crafts, music, literature and group activities.
- Must have experience in supervising children, staff and handling conflict situations with parents and staff.
- Must be capable of establishing and maintaining positive relationships with staff, parents, program participants, and with the general public.
- Must be able to work as a team member and possess the core values that meet the YMCA mission.
- Maintain current certifications in CPR AED, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention, Safety & Risk management and other training required for YMCA Preschool employees within 60-90 days of employment
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personal information on children, family and YMCA staff.
- Provide a quality environment in preschool classroom, taking into consideration the needs of each child and the goals and objectives of the YMCA.
- Build a positive teacher-student relationship with each child, helping children to develop a positive self-image and relate well with peers.
- Prepare for daily classroom activities (i.e. lesson plans) in advance, including the ordering of supplies.
- Provide a stimulating environment by decorating according to the seasons/curriculum, YMCA core values, etc.
- Perform administrative duties required of preschool teachers, including preparing reports and maintaining records, such as class rosters and accident reports.
- May compile program supply order and document work order needs for program repairs.
- Ensure participant registration forms are complete and contain essential information on each child.
- May assist with hiring, training and evaluation of staff and volunteers.
- Provide consistent communication to parents (both written and verbal), as needed, throughout the year.
- Conduct student evaluations (progress reports) as required and attend all parent conferences and preschool events scheduled.
- Attend and contribute to all staff meetings and in-service trainings.
- May assist with scheduling special classes (gym, music, & swimming) and programs for preschool.
- Adhere to the YMCA dress code and assist in monitoring staff for appropriate dress.
- Accept responsibility for the safety of children, which includes having knowledge of emergency procedures and assisting in emergency situations as needed.
- Assist children with daily tasks, as needed, which includes restroom breaks, zipping coats, tying shoes, etc.
- Model and utilize appropriate YMCA behavior management techniques.
- Exhibit a positive and cooperative attitude towards department staff, parents, participants and the YMCA.
- Notify Supervisor of absences, in writing, at least 2 weeks in advance (with the exception of emergencies).
- Anything deemed necessary by the Supervisor in regards to the job position.
