The School of Nursing at the University of Virginia invites applications for a new Student Success Specialist. Position Summary:
The Student Success Specialist will collaborate with the other Student Success Specialist, the academic program directors, other faculty, advisors, academic program managers, and the Office of Admissions and Student Services (OASS) staff to lead academic success and student development initiatives.
Responsibilities:
Plan, implement, and evaluate initiatives to boost student success (30%):
Direct the planning, execution, and assessment of holistic success strategies and initiatives throughout the student lifecycle.
Design academic support models based on current evidenced based practices that promote student retention and success.
Develop and improve the learning experience and success of adult learners, first generation learners, and students from underrepresented groups.
Provide direct career and academic advising to graduate nursing students, addressing needs and identifying opportunities from orientation through graduation (40%):
Serve as dedicated academic advisor for all Direct-Entry CNL students providing personal academic counseling and support.
Develop next steps for moving to a professional advising model for other nursing graduate programs.
Closely monitor student needs and performance, working collaboratively with the program managers, program directors, and faculty to identify at-risk situations and opportunities to promote academic success and student retention.
Provide proactive and timely outreach and intervention to students through a variety of methods.
Work with each student to identify and adopt methods that utilize his/her unique strengths and promote success.
Support programming and initiatives that create learning environments that promote student success and academic excellence (25%):
Partner to address student concerns and needs in a timely and proactive fashion
Contribute to the academic program team and OASS in the coordination of new student orientation and other special events, collaborating with faculty, staff, University partners, and students.
Partner with and/or actively participate in committees, work groups, task forces to ensure commitment to student support initiatives, the common good, community engaged partnerships, UVA and School of Nursing policies and processes. This includes working closely with learning support offices across grounds, including the Student Disability Access Center, the Dathel and John Georges Student Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, and the University Career Center, and others.
Provide support to OASS programs and events and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
BA/BS degree and minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
Direct experience advising and mentoring students.
Experience working with populations representing diverse backgrounds, life experiences and/or abilities.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work both independently and in a team environment in academic and/or community setting.
Non-judgmental approach to building compassionate relationships with learners from underrepresented minority populations.
Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, communication and student advocacy skills, including the ability to “meet students where they are”.
Understanding of basic relationship-building approaches and best practices for academic success.
Ability to be flexible, prioritize and organized; high degree of attention to detail is critical.
Ability to work under deadlines, to adapt to changing priorities and needs, to assume other duties as assigned.
Ability to use a variety of platforms and programs including Windows, Apple, and/or Microsoft Office products.
Experience with virtual communication tools (Zoom, Skype, etc.).
Able to use cloud-based storage (Google Drive, Box, OneDrive) to share and collaborate with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Affairs, Nursing, Higher Education, or related industry and 4 + years of full-time experience.
Experience in working with traditional undergraduate and/or adult learners, especially on academic success strategies & skills.
Experience collaborating with University faculty, staff, and/or partners.
Experience with assessment and data-driven decision-making.
Knowledge of academic success and stressors of both undergraduate and adult learners.
Demonstrated knowledge of online, hybrid and other learning platforms & approaches.
Knowledge of higher education policies, procedures and theories, including student development and student advising.
Demonstrated ability to perform with a high degree of professionalism in all work settings and functions including all interactions with students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
Ability to manifest a genuine passion for helping students develop personally and professionally along with a proven ability to build collaborative and highly productive relationships with multiple stakeholders.
Confidence in learning and exploring new education technology tools and resources.
Compensation:
The anticipated salary range for this position is $58,000 - $62,000. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits . Employee benefits package highlights include:
