Student Coordinator Job at University of Tennessee
: Reporting to the Executive Director of the Institute for American Civics in the Howard H. Baker School of Public Policy, this position is responsible for structuring and delivering the co-curricular content of Institute for American Civics programs, and for the professional mentorship of students. This position involves supporting the shared initiatives of the IAC Executive Director, Director of Policy Partnerships, and Director of Student Programs. This position is responsible for the planning and implementation of the following programs: Constitution Day, Local Government Fellows, Honor’s Grounded Learning in Civic Engagement, Tennessee Campus Civic Summit, TN Teacher’s Academy, Vols Vote. The position will support the professional development and mentorship of interns through the Baker Experience Program.
Specifically, this position:
- Coordinates IAC Professional Development Efforts (25%)
o Identifies and develops relationships with external partners in pursuit of internship and engagement opportunities for students.
o Depending on experience, teaches a class in the Baker Experience sequence, preparing students to succeed in internships by providing professionalization training.
o Oversees selection efforts for IAC fellows.
o Supports Baker School interns other campus internship programs where the IAC is engaged.
o Designs and implements professional development training and civic education for all interns with government-related and policy-related internships.
- Coordinates IAC Engagement Activities (25%)
o Primary coordinator of all Institute civic engagement initiatives.
o Develops new Institute initiatives with the input of the IAC executive director.
o Plans and executes on campus wide civic engagement strategies, programs, and projects.
o Plans and administers the Teacher’s Academy to promote statewide civic engagement and education for K-12 educators.
o Researches best practices for civic engagement and implements to the Center’s assessment strategy for civic engagement programs.
- Coordinates IAC Communications (20%)
o Maintains student records and related data with the IAC Executive Director.
o Creates communication strategy to maximize recruitment effectiveness for all IAC offerings and programs; highlights and celebrates IAC students in regular social media, and other outlets. Develops this strategy in collaboration with the Director of External Affairs and the Communications team.
o Supervises students’ interactions with alumni on LinkedIn and other social media.
o Helps plan and execute events and facilitate student-alumni interactions.
o Maintains alumni database.
- Provides Strategic Input and Administrative Support (15%)
o Develops trainings and curriculum to prepare IAC undergraduates for careers in public policy and public service through the maintenance and growth of current programs.
o Creates a strategy to increase the impact of IAC programming across campus and the state to support a more civically engaged and knowledgeable population.
o Facilitates recruitment efforts for all Institute offerings.
o Manages application and interview scheduling for limited access programs, including Local Government Fellows, Honor’s Grounded Learning in Civic Engagement, and the TN Teacher’s Academy.
o Interviews and vets student candidates for all programs.
- Supports IAC Academic Initiatives
o Will be responsible for advising students in Institute academic programs.
o Mentor students participating in Institute’s programs, ensuring compliance and integration with students’ programs of study.
All positions may also be assigned additional duties.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- 2 – 3 years’ experience working in federal, state, or local government or in a quasi- or non-governmental organization that works directly with the government.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of student recruitment, mentorship, and ongoing engagement.
- Knowledge of structuring and delivering curricular content.
- Working knowledge of social disciplines and academic organizational structures.
- Master’s Degree in public administration, public policy, public health, planning, law, political science, history, economics, environmental science or other related field.
- 2-3 years professional experience in education, student services, student engagement, or higher education administration.
- Student engagement, recruitment, and advising experience in higher education.
- Experience in one public policy or social science discipline
