This outreach notice is to inform prospective applicants of three permanent full-time positions on the Malheur National Forest. These positions will have a duty station of John Day, Oregon. Two positions would be in the Supervisors Office and one position would be on the Blue Mountain Ranger District. The announcement closes on 2/9/2023.

The Position: The two positions in the Supervisors Office will provide support services to a wide variety of land management projects, performing the duties of a professional Soil Scientist with primary focus and responsibilities involving the integration of soil resource management in planning and operations on the district. The position serves as an active member of interdisciplinary teams, providing soils input and preparing specialist reports as needed for NEPA projects on the district, including vegetation management, fuels reduction, recreation, watershed restoration, and special uses. The position works with ID team members to develop soil and water conservation practices, best management practices, and site-specific mitigation aimed at meeting Land and Resource Management Plan standards and guidelines, maintaining or enhancing long-term site productivity, and containing the extent of detrimental soil conditions. The Position in the Blue Mountain Ranger District will serve as a Soil Scientist/Hydrologist supporting the Watershed Program. Restoration experience is preferred but not required. A working background in stream and watershed restoration is desirable. This position will provide technical expertise to assure forest activities comply with the Clean Water Act and meet State Water Quality Standards. This position is responsible for conducting environmental analysis in an interdisciplinary approach on the soil and hydrologic impacts from a wide variety of forest and watershed management activities such as; fuels reduction, timber harvest, watershed restoration, fish and wildlife habitat enhancement, grazing, mining and recreation. The position is responsible for and provides technical guidance for protection, management and improvement of soil, surface water and groundwater resources.
