Position Overview
Sports Illustrated is seeking a Senior Writer to become a part of our editorial team covering the NFL. The ideal candidate will be responsible for covering the league with breadth and depth on all platforms (print, digital, video, social), coordinating with editors on emerging news stories and producing informative, differentiating content for an SI audience that expects premium storytelling and reporting. Applicants should have access to league, front office, agent and player direct contacts, and be able to write on complex issues quickly, cleanly and with authority. The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment is essential. Candidates also must be willing to work flexible hours based on seasonality.
The position (Tier 6, Writer 4) is part of the collective bargaining unit represented by the New York NewsGuild. The anticipated annual salary for this position is $125,000.
Responsibilities
- Ability to create daily content while also multitasking to balance creation of features and long-term assignments for digital and print platforms.
- Ability to establish readership growth through SI's multi-platform content strategy.
- Ability to leverage resources and contacts to break industry news.
- Will require travel, covering some events in-person.
- Daily: Craft interesting analysis, comparisons, rankings and lists, such as rookie, QB and coaching rankings, in addition to a "Playoff Picture" piece and Draft Forecast file.
- Weekly: Create high-quality feature stories that typically run in the magazine and prominently on the web, and bring an authoritative voice in opinion columns (often on tougher and high profile topics).
- While producing daily content, reporter will simultaneously carve out time for investigative pieces that have been among the highest-impact stories SI has run in recent years.
- Develop contacts with leagues, front offices, agents and players.
- Ability to write on complex issues quickly, cleanly and with authority.
- Ability to do extensive reporting, research and analysis to write long-form features and investigative pieces.
- Would occasionally contribute to MMQB content and podcasts.
Requirements
- Typically requires a minimum of ten (10) years of related experience, ideally covering the NFL (either nationally or locally on a beat) for a media organization.
- Deep knowledge about the inner workings of the league and its 32 teams in order to be able to provide unique content. Familiarity with other sports is a bonus.
- Ability to react quickly to breaking news.
- Strong news judgment and awareness of emerging trends.
- Excellent organizational, reporting, communication and time-management skills.
- Attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
- This position requires flexibility to work nights, weekends and holidays.
- Bachelor's Degree, ideally in journalism, communications or English, preferred
