Senior Staff Accountant Job at Northwestern Mutual
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Staff Accountant position is responsible for the day-to-day accounting function of office operations which may include Network Office insurance and investment lines of business; the accounting duties may also include District Office(s). This role works collaboratively with other members of the finance team, including the Chief Financial Officer.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
- Manage accounts payable to properly plan cash flow so that expenses are paid in a timely fashion. Maintain accurate files of invoices or other source documents.
- Process payroll. Pay necessary state and federal taxes. Pay for benefit plans via proper deductions. Maintain accurate records of wages, benefits, taxes and time off accruals. Prepare annual W2 statements. If the above is being processed by an outside payroll service, then the position will require the monitoring of all payroll activity to ensure that it is being properly executed by the outside payroll service.
- Pay financial representative commissions. Recover all financial representative debt on a timely basis.
- Prepare annual 1099 statements for financial representatives.
- Process financial representative and staff reimbursements and bonuses for all offices.
- Daily data input into accounting system. Throughout the month, make entries into the accounting system, using proper double-entry accounting procedures, and complete input on a timely basis for month-end and year-end accounting.
- For loans, prepare depreciation schedules, which match the loan repayment schedule or obtain depreciation entries from outside accountant for amortization of assets that do not follow the loan repayment schedules. Record amortization/depreciation expense on a monthly basis.
- Manage the transfer of funds.
- Reconcile bank accounts and the premiums in escrow accounts monthly. May also include the reconciliation of district office bank accounts.
- Prepare all information for outside accountant to complete tax returns.
- Educate new financial representatives on compensation, including the facilitation of finance and persistency sessions during Financial Planning Academy.
- Teach Commission Statement session during FPA 45 Day Reconnect
- Deposit and track checks.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSBILITIES
- Process and manage office orders through Office Depot.
- Act as liaison between the Network Office and firms requesting employment verification.
- Prepare and analyze monthly Development Report for Leadership Team.
- Prepare and analyze monthly IPS Production Report for Leadership Team.
- Monitor GA085 lapse rate through Field Management Information Online.
- Communicate Home Office notices (ISA Closure/Policy Lapse Notices) to FR and their staff.
- Termination Coordinator – manage termination team during Financial Representative termination.
- Review GA085 application issues with Home Office Underwriting Team (monthly meeting).
- Maintain copy/print, postage, and parking validation logs.
- Maintain Pitney Bowes and Ricoh machines in the San Diego office.
- Manage parking for the San Diego office in conjunction with ACE parking.
- 401K Sponsor Primary Plan Contact for American Funds.
- Mario Lemieux Foundation office maintenance.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Three or more years of experience in accounting, including general ledger maintenance, annual tax filings, and payroll.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, and technologically savvy.
- Knowledge of standard accounting software, including Quicken personal finance software, preferred.
- Strong presentation, persuasion, problem solving, oral and written communication skills.
- Strong personal code of ethics, including maintaining confidentiality.
- High self-motivation and strong organization skills.
- Ability to adapt and learn in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
- Team player and positive attitude.
