Seeking individuals committed to hands-on outdoor education that appreciate sharing nature, history, and outdoor recreation with others. These positions will join a team of energetic and engaging outdoor educators, naturalists, and historians in the North Dakota State Parks and Recreation Department. This team engages with and evokes the curiosity of visitors to achieve an appreciation and awareness for North Dakota’s natural beauty, vibrant culture, timeless history and exciting recreational opportunities. Summary of Work

You would be responsible to the park manager, park ranger, park interpreter, and/or the education and programs division chief who supervises the operation of educational programming services. Your key duty is to create and deliver interactive, hands-on programs or tours utilizing museums, outdoor amphitheaters, visitor centers, special events, recreational trails, and educational materials. This is a uniformed position that requires both indoor and outdoor work as well as day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

  • Research, prepare and present information and hands-on activities to general audiences and special interest groups (schools, scouts, youth) surrounding natural sciences, cultural resources, history and/or recreational opportunities while utilizing a variety of programming materials.
  • Become familiar with a variety of materials that may include, but not be limited to, field guides, water test kits, historical replicas, artifacts, binoculars, canoes, compasses, and wildlife pelts/skulls while acquiring the knowledge to incorporate such materials within hands-on, educational programs and activities.
  • Serve as a tour guide of historical buildings, locations, and other points of interest (location dependent).
  • Market, promote, coordinate, and assist with special events and educational/recreational/historical programming.
  • Maintain interpretive materials, statistics, reports and files.
  • Provide general customer service via telephone, point of sale software, email, social media and on-site personal assistance (location dependent).
  • Lead and assist in the leading of daytime, evening, and/or weekend educational, recreational, and/or historical programs.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and trainings.
  • Participate in any outreach programs as necessary for the program operation.
  • Provide a positive atmosphere for all visitors; allowing them flexibility to meet their needs while still achieving park and program goals.
  • Some in-state traveling may be required to attend training or assisting other team members.
  • Other duties may also include general cleaning, light maintenance and trail work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to clearly communicate instructions, directions and information to the public.
  • Good skills working with the public and interacting with people of all ages, interests, viewpoints, and backgrounds.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to varying weather conditions/temperatures for extended periods and work effectively during daylight and evening hours.
  • Ability to operate audiovisual equipment.
  • Ability to conduct nature programs/activities in a variety of terrain settings.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with the ability to operate motor vehicles.

Requires satisfactory completion of the interview process, a verifiable record of satisfactory performance in previous employment. Requires the knowledge and skills equivalent to the completion of high school with demonstrated research, presentation, or entertainment experience. Additional training or experience in a communication, science, history, education and/or interpretive field is desirable.
