Salary Plan/Grade:
Gen Transportation Tech I (A14) $43,200 - $49,134 (annually)
Gen Transportation Tech II (A15) $45,600 - $52,045 (annually)

General Transportation Tech I
Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
General Transportation Tech II
Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, contract maintenance, and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform wok independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
The essential duties for General Transportation Tech I include:
- Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guardrails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
- Mows right-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling machine.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractort railer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.
- Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
In addition to the above, essential duties for General Transportation Tech II include:
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guardrails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses equipment and tools, materials, and products.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
General Transportation Tech I:
- No Experience Required
General Transportation Tech II:
- One (1) year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation or related work experience.
- Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Licenses and Certifications:
General Transportation Tech I and II:
- Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License without restrictions at time of application.
- Must have or obtain an "N" endorsement on Class A CDL within 120 days from hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License without restrictions with an "N" endorsement
Competencies:
The required competencies for General Transportation Tech I include:
- Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
- Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
- Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
- The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
- Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
- Using of light and heavy highway equipment
- Maintaining a safe working relationship
In addition to the above, the competencies for General Transportation Tech II include:
- Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
- Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
- Plan review methods, processes and procedures
- Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
The physical duties for both General Transportation Tech I and II include:
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
- Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places, heat, and chemicals
- Subject to air and skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending that spine at waist
- Standing for prolonged periods of time
- Walking - moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance from one site to another
- Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
- Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
- Safety Impact certifications are not required at the time of application. As required, the Safety Impact and Commercial Driver certification(s) will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.
- Required to work weekends and holidays.
- Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
- Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
- Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
