POSITION SUMMARY:
This grant-funded position will focus on organizing in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) to protect the health care and information we provide in the Border region and amplify the voices of the people we serve. The RGV Organizer will be responsible for building people power in the community, supporting and expanding the volunteer program, and executing local, statewide, and national reproductive rights campaigns. Key priorities include: grassroots and digital organizing, engaging community activists and volunteers, executing rapid response events, Healthy Neighborhood Canvassing, overseeing a Patient Advocacy Program, developing connections with local student groups, and delivering education sessions to community leaders and elected officials. To accomplish these priorities the Organizer may engage in door-to-door canvassing, text banking, phone banking, presentations, volunteer training, as well as other tactics. The Organizer must have superior interpersonal skills in order to maintain excellent relationships with staff in all departments, community partners and allies, and volunteers. The position reports to the Director of Public Affairs, and also works collaboratively and in consultation with the RGV Community Engagement Manager and the Volunteers & Community Advocacy Manager.
The Organizer executes all work in ways that promote a positive image of Planned Parenthood and creates a high-quality, positive work environment for staff, patients, volunteers and supporters. Requires onsite presence; organizing work primarily in Cameron County (Brownsville and Harlingen). Evening and weekend hours required as well as periodic travel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Implements and manages effective projects, actions and campaigns that increase advocacy for local Planned Parenthood health centers.
2. Recruits, educates and supports activists in target areas and mobilizes them to take action that furthers the public affairs goals of Planned Parenthood.
3. Develops and grows the number of PPST volunteers in the RGV, with focus in Brownsville and Harlingen.
4. Organizes and executes field tactics such as door-to-door and event canvassing, volunteer orientations, and leadership development trainings to increase awareness of PP services and support various public affairs goals and campaigns.
5. Works collaboratively with RGV Community Engagement Manager to ensure work is aligned, projects complement each other, and further the priorities of PPST.
6. Develops and implements the PPST’s Patient Advocacy Program in the RGV, including the Health Center Advocacy Project and Health Neighborhood Canvass.
7. Establishes a Planned Parenthood presence in area colleges/universities, ensuring students have the resources they need to have successful groups.
8. Manages the recruitment of potential PPST storytellers who can share their experience in PPST solicitations, newsletters, social media and in media interviews.
9. Further develops PPST’s relationships with coalition partners, community organizations, students, and the general public.
10. Under general direction, coordinates meetings with government officials and lawmakers, to include volunteers and PPST staff, in an effort to build strong relationships with local governments.
11. Input all program data to track and analyze volunteer/advocacy campaigns by using constituent management software, including the Voter Activation Network (VAN) database and Every Action.
12. Collaborates with Planned Parenthood Texas Votes on C3 permissible activities, as assigned. Adheres to C3/C4 separation policies and procedures.
13. Attends meetings and represents PPST, as assigned. Seeks opportunities that intersect with PPST’s public affairs agenda.
14. Assists with social media, rapid response, communications campaigns, and other special projects as assigned.
15. Speaks on occasion in front of both small and large audiences, at rallies and various events.
16. Keeps current regarding the content of sexual and reproductive health issues and the operations of PPST in general.
17. Manages all work using a diversity, equity and inclusive (DEI) lens.
18. Attends PPST, statewide, and national office meetings and serves on workgroups and committees.
19. Performs other related duties as assigned.
20. Complies with the House Rules, which are a required part of the Agency’s orientation, training and performance standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Formal education is valued, but not required and lived experience is valued equally. Studies, certificates and degrees in the areas of public health, public policy, non-profit operations, are preferred.
Experience: 1-2 years of experience in organizing/advocacy work is highly desirable. Experience organizing others is preferred. Experience training and/or providing presentations is beneficial. Experience in family planning, women’s health, sexual and reproductive health is preferred.
Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to engage with, support, manage or mobilize people from diverse backgrounds, and establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with them.
  • Highly organized, great attention to details, and accurate/precise in all matters of work.
  • Working knowledge of Voter Activation Network (VAN) and Every Action.
  • Full functionality in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Bilingual (Spanish & English) – oral and written – is required.
  • Good understanding of social media platforms and use of these to reach supporters.
  • Ability to work as a team member and leader.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing landscape.
  • Ability to make independent decisions that show sound, professional judgment.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Access to reliable personal transportation with ability to travel within Cameron County/Rio Grande Valley frequently. Primary worksite in either Harlingen or Brownsville.
  • Ability to travel to PPST’s central offices in San Antonio, TX occasionally.
  • Ability to travel outside the service delivery area occasionally.
  • Ability to lift, bend, stoop, carry, push and pull 1-20 pounds frequently.
  • Highly sensitive and competent regarding issues of multiculturalism.
  • Comfortable with issues of sexual and reproductive health.
  • Able and willing to work for an Agency that supports a patient's right to make personal decisions regarding health care including their right to choose what option is best for them if faced with an unintended pregnancy.
  • Demonstrates a strong, personal commitment to the Agency’s position on customer service, internally and externally, for all clients, all services and all departments.

Other Job Details :
This is a grant-funded position, which may be extended or shortened based upon availability of grant funds and/or work. This position is at-will. This position has an anticipated program end date 1 year from the start date. The salary range for this position is $52,000 - $58,000. The salary paid will be determined based on experience, education and skills of the candidate.
