Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision. Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

Department Description

The Perianesthesia (Preop) and Post-Anesthesia Care Units (PACU) at Parnassus comprises 37 combined Preop and PACU beds, in addition to a Procedure department. The Parnassus Perianesthesia Department unit is a fast-paced, high-acuity, and high-volume patient care unit.

The Perianesthesia department can see up to 80+ patients a day. The unit utilize its one (1) procedural suite and its accompanying four (4) beds for transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE), Cardioversion, electro-cardioversion (ECT) or preparing patients for surgery and recovering them. There is a variety of patient populations and surgical specialties, including but not limited to: General Surgery, Genitourinary, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Maxillofacial, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic and Neurosurgical Spine, Cardiac, Vascular, Transplant, Plastics, and Dental. In addition to the surgical services, the Perianesthesia Department receives and recovers patients from inpatient procedural areas, such as those requiring cardiac catheterization/electrophysiology lab, endoscopy suites, interventional radiology, and MRI.

The patient population has multiple levels of acuity from same-day (“come-and-go”) surgical patients to those patients requiring intensive care management. The registered nurse must be comfortable performing timely and detailed physical assessments and appropriately address pain levels, while quickly recognizing and responding to any change in a patient’s condition.

This rapid pace requires nurses to manage multiple tasks, have exceptional clinical and critical thinking skills, teamwork and professional collaboration, communication, and have excellent bedside manner to both patients and their family members. The registered nurse must have the ability and knowledge to provide the best possible care to multiple patients, as they transition from the operating room, into the PACU, and eventually their next stage of care and recovery.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1 year inpatient PreOp/PACU experience
  • Two years of recent (in the past 5 years) RN experience in Critical-Care Nursing
  • On-Call commitment
  • Knowledge of airway management, anesthesia recovery and pain management
  • Must be able to bend, pull and push up to 20 lbs.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BSN
  • CPAN or CCRN certification

License/Certification

Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
