Symbrosia is a cleantech startup cultivating Asparagopsis taxiformis, red seaweed, as a livestock feed material. With high potency and wide-spectrum efficacy, Asparagopsis is a promising natural intervention for reducing enteric methane emissions from ruminants by over 90%. State of the art facilities at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawai’i Authority (NELHA) are the innovation grounds for Symbrosia’s development of cultivation technologies to enable seaweed production at an impactful scale. *This position is full-time in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i. Applicants must be able to work in the United States.

As R&D Engineer, your role is to seamlessly flex between multiple disciplines – biological, chemical, and physical – to effectively execute tests and projects on the cutting edge of Symbrosia’s technology and plant expansion. You must have a solid fundamental understanding of mechanical, electrical, and fluids engineering, or some combination thereof. You will be responsible for the design, build, and commissioning of equipment in support of test and manufacturing development objectives. You will also be the engineer responsible for running tests and generating reliable data associated with federal grants. The ability to collaboratively work with engineering, procurement, cultivation, the R&D team, to accomplish tasks and get decision quality data into the hands of teammates in time to influence design decisions is the critical skill for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Design, procure, and commission of various types of equipment necessary for a specific test or project.
  • Perform experiments to inform next phases of facility and infrastructure expansion
  • Identify opportunities in advanced manufacturing, automation, and design to improve system efficiency, throughput, stability, and cost of algae production
  • Provide reliable project management during all project phases
  • Manage dependencies between teams and components
  • Own data collection and measurement of success of systems and improvements
  • Actively support the innovation stage-gate process: brainstorming and ideation sessions, concept development, concept screening, feasibility and commercialization.
  • Provide written and verbal reports of research activities, literature findings, and statistical data analysis
  • Maintain a safe working environment and provide general laboratory support and maintenance
  • Preserve all forms of intellectual and material property, contribute to writing patents and internal protocols

A successful candidate will have:

  • B.S. in engineering or science field is required; electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering or similar
  • 3+ years' experience in design-build fundamentals: CAD, component selection, structural analysis, design for manufacturing, GD&T
  • Excellent troubleshooting/problem-solving skills with great attention to detail
  • Effective at communicating technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly
  • A can-do attitude and an eagerness to learn
  • Ability to think of innovative solutions to challenging problems
  • Willingness to challenge how things are typically done in search of better, more efficient methods
  • Experience with developing and executing test plans
  • Motivation to work on the climate crisis!

Bonus competencies

  • Algae, plant or microbe related engineering experience
  • Data analysis and programming experience (R, python, other)

Pay: $72,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
