The Pet Cancer Foundation’s vision is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of pets diagnosed with cancer. Estimates suggest that 12M dogs and cats are developing cancer every year, roughly 6x the number of humans getting cancer yearly within North America.
We need to do more for our furry friends, and we're building a large team of distributed, animal-loving passionate volunteers to help them and their families. Our team requires an experienced senior-level media relations leaders as we set out to define our strategy and launch our organization to the broader public. That's where and how you can help us.
About the position:
As one of our volunteer Public Relations Specialists, you will carry out initiatives to attain "brand and product" visibility for all that we do. A key function of our PR Specialist is to obtain media placements of PCF public service announcements for campaigns that spread awareness about pet cancer, launch products and services to the public, and to generate funding to carry out our critical work. Other duties include drafting press releases, pitches, and case studies, among other needs. Tracking and analyzing media coverage is another important function of the Specialist’s role to support the organization. This role works collaboratively with the internal and external communications teams as well as other stakeholders to promote and protect the organization’s reputation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Pitch and secure earned media placements for PCF public service announcements, on broadcast television and radio
- Build relationships with new media contacts and maintain relationships with existing contacts
- Manage media requests in a timely and professional manner
- Draft press releases, pitches, case studies, white papers, and media summaries
- Pitch story ideas and content to media when required
- Ensure all communication is cohesive with the brand image
- Track and analyze media coverage to inform future campaigns
- Measure PR program impacts using regular reporting
About You:
You are a results oriented, achiever that is dedicated, driven, and enthusiastic, and thrives in a collaborative environment. You’re goal is to shape the stories of those your work with, developing key messages, and producing successful outcomes that resonate with key audiences You have:
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or related field
- 3-4 years of experience in public relations or corporate communications
- Excellent organization skills
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
- Strong working knowledge of a variety of public relations programs
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Proven ability to develop, implement, and execute successful public relations campaigns

- Expectations regarding a time commitment are in the range of 4-6 hours per week on average.
