JOB PURPOSE:

The Public Policy Channel Manager is a new role within the Hoover Institution’s growing Marketing & Communications team. This key position works to increase the visibility of the research and scholarship of Hoover Institution fellows among targeted public policy audience segments via traditional and innovative communication channels. Familiarity with key constituents in the public policy landscape and experience in building relationships using targeted communication tools is desired.


The Public Policy Channel Manager will work closely with the Institution’s social media team and product managers to cultivate and engage target audiences, expand distribution of Hoover’s research output in the public policy space, and monitor competitor activity.


Under minimal supervision, this position provides support in planning, coordinating, and implementing communication programs. Develop external written communications and work with the team to coordinate distribution efforts and community awareness of all Hoover content. CORE DUTIES*:

  • Develop, execute and oversee written communications of moderate complexity, including presentations, speeches, news stories, web content, talking points, and correspondence and social media posts.
  • Participate in regular meetings of key researchers with media relations needs to develop strategies and tactics for facilitating effective communications.
  • Assist in identifying and maintaining professional relationships with key press and community leaders.
  • Assist in preparing content for internal or external newsletters. Understand email and digital content distribution.
  • Identify individuals/groups to attend and/or speak at public meetings or other events.
  • Coordinate media, community or government relations, and ensure logistics and preparations are handled.

ADDITIONAL CORE DUTIES*:

  • Build targeted audiences for the Institution’s research output.
  • Engage the policy community and cultivate Hoover target audiences.
  • Map influencers for the institution as a whole and for specific research programs.
  • Collaborate closely with social media team to ensure targeted distribution and optimal outreach for key research.
  • Develop and maintain “owned audience” lists for research distribution.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent written communication skills, reporting skills, and skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proof reading.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal communications groups across campus.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of people.
  • Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • None

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasionally work on evenings and weekends.
  • On call and ability to respond 24/7

The expected pay range for this position is $84,000 to $109,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
