Position - Plant Operator
Location - Ball Mountain and Townshend Hydroelectric Generating Stations Townshend, Vermont
Classification - This position is considered Part-Time / Non-Exempt
Responsibilities and duties – The individual assigned to this position is responsible for the safe, environmentally compliant, and efficient operation of the power projects located in Jamaica and Townshend, Vermont. The projects consist of two FERC-Licensed hydroelectric power stations and associated infrastructure. The Plant Operator is expected demonstrate the ability to comply with all reasonable industry related standards and programs. Some specific responsibilities may also include the following:
- Work safely and participate in the provision of a safe work environment for others
- Qualify in and maintain qualifications for all facility-designated operating watch-standing positions
- Maintain security at the main powerhouse, all outlying buildings, grounds and all other related structures
- Must possess the ability to observe and record all facility parameters
- Identify any abnormal plant condition and take the appropriate corrective actions when possible
- Start, stop and control all physical plant assets utilizing both local and remote systems
- Safeguard the plant by complying with and enforcing all facility safety policies
- Maintain and enforce all local, state and federal environmental permits and regulatory requirements
- Coordinate and record all facility related events as appropriate
- Operate the plant in the most efficient manner possible without degrading plant equipment
- Comply with company standards, practices and policies
- Assist in developing and improving operational policies and procedures
- Maintain accurate logbook entries
- Provide accurate operational and maintenance records as required
- Perform maintenance tasks as assigned
- Respond to emergency situations, when necessary
- Respond to plant call-outs when required
- Must demonstrate the ability to use a word processer, enter data into various spreadsheets and database software
- Perform other collateral duties as assigned
Organizational Relationships -
- Report directly to the Regional Operator - Townshend
- Report all dam safety related incidents to the appropriate Army Corps of Engineers designee
Qualifications -
- A minimum of an associate's degree in a technical or engineering discipline or equivalent
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment, experience in hydro, steam and/or gas turbine power plant operations is preferred
- Experienced in the use of personal computers
- Must be able to read and understand single and three electrical drawing
- Must demonstrate the ability to read and understand P&IDs
- Must possess a thorough understanding of 3-phase power generation
- Must possess the understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic control systems
- Ability to understand complex issues as they relate to plant operations
- Ability to work extended hours, if and when required
- Must be capable of performing maintenance duties in outdoor situations
- Ability to perform operational tasks. Operational tasks may include:
- The ability to distinguish between colors
- The ability to climb ladders and to be at heights of 80 -100 feet
- The ability and dexterity to manipulate various size components from valves to small electrical switches to computer keyboards
- The ability to perform chemical sampling procedures
- The ability to "handle" quick changing situations under stress
