Shift/Hours: 8 hour shifts (days, nights, evenings with rotating weekends)

Duties Include:

• Complies with program, department, and facility policies and procedures.
• May be requested to assume and carry out the duties of the shift manager.
• Provides for an organizational approach to the developmental program of physical care, training and recreation of the clients that is consistent with their individual habilitation plan.
• Takes part in special and individualized events for clients, such as birthday parties, dances, movies, community outings, shopping trips, training programs, etc.
• Works closely with all members of the IDT and recognizes the importance of the team approach to carry out comprehensive programs for clients.
• May be requested to administer and record medications and treatments as ordered by the residence physician.
• Assures that each client receives appreciable and appropriate attention daily, in an individualized fashion. Takes a positive behavioral approach to each client.
• Communicates both verbally and by recording pertinent information about the client to other team members.
• Is continuously ready to assist clients in areas of need, recognizing the integrity and dignity of clients and their rights as individuals.
• Observes clients' conditions and behavior; reports changes to the shift manager or US, and when appropriate, to the IPC.
• Accounts for all clients at shift changes.
• When assigned to the medication room, counts all hypnotics with the previous shift and signs for them in the hypnotic control log. Performs the same function with the oncoming shift. Checks medication cart and enters findings on form PVL 497 (Unit Dose Cart Check Log).
• Creates a safe and therapeutic environment, and when called upon, decorates the residence, which creates a more home-like appearance.
• Submits written reports to the shift manager and US, as requested.
• Is familiar with department and facility philosophy goals and objectives, including licensing, Cal. Standards, and facility long-range plans.
• Performs other duties as assigned by shift manager or US.

Requirements:

• Possession of a valid license to practice as a Psychiatric Technician issued by the BVNPTE.
• (Applicants who are within four months of completing the Psychiatric Technician curriculum accredited by the BVNPTE will be admitted to the examination, but they must secure this license before they will be eligible for appointment.)

Knowledge of:

• Custody procedures, and public and property protection policies; fundamentals of nursing care, general behavioral and psychiatric procedures, forensic client, patient, or inmate behavior and mental health principles and techniques involved in the care and treatment of individual or groups of developmentally or mentally disordered forensic clients, patients, or inmates; current first-aid methods;

Ability to:

• Learn and apply sound judgment for situations including the protection of persons and property; apply basic nursing knowledge, skills, and attitudes; establish effective therapeutic relationships with developmentally or mentally disordered forensic clients, patients, or inmates
