What You Will Do

Project Specialist 1 ($56,300 - $87,200)

The Utilities & Infrastructure (UI) Division is seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic early-career employees with strong problem-solving, communication, and team-building skills. The UI Division is responsible for maintaining and operating all the Laboratory's utility systems including electric, gas, sewer, steam, and water. In addition, UI maintains and manages all the open space on site, including roads, the traffic and transportation system, and the Laboratory's Sustainability Program. The selected candidates will work within the UI Division as a Project Specialist and will assist the Division's Technical Project Managers in developing, coordinating, and ensuring successful execution of the project portfolio. The selected candidates will report to the Operations Support & Improvement (OSI) Group Leader and work to ensure the UI projects are effectively executed to support DOE's national security, science, energy, and environmental management mission.

Project Specialist 2 ($67,800 - $107,700)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the selected candidate will apply project and/or construction management skills by participating more independently. The selected candidate will also support the Division's Technical Project Managers with detailed assignments in developing, coordinating, and ensuring successful execution of the project portfolio.

Project Specialist 2

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the selected candidate will apply project and/or construction management skills by participating more independently. The selected candidate will also support the Division's Technical Project Managers with detailed assignments in developing, coordinating, and ensuring successful execution of the project portfolio.

Additional Job Requirements for Level 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Demonstrated familiarity with most aspects of project management and project control activities
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the tools and techniques relating to construction project activities
  • Demonstrated technical comprehension of engineering, procurement, estimating, and construction
  • Ability to develop and document project scope, execution plans, budget and overall schedule to Technical Project Manager and Integrated Project Teams
  • Ability to provide evidence of strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and team building

Education/Experience for level 1 : This position is expected to be entry level into construction related fields. One to two years of construction or engineering related experience required.





Education/Experience for level 2 : This position is expected to be entry level into construction related fields. Three or more years of construction or engineering related experience required.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Coursework focused on traffic infrastructure, transportation planning, project management, utility systems, public administration, or related fields
  • Currently enrolled in a construction science, project management, or engineering bachelor's degree program
  • Recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in construction science, project management, engineering, or related field

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q/SCI(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
