The Opportunity
Process Engineer-Separation will lead the conceptual design work for the downstream processing to the main production system, which utilizes Cemvita’s technology. In this position, you will define the appropriate separation techniques based of physical and chemical characteristics of different constituents from production system. This may include solid-liquid, liquid-liquid, gas-liquid or gas-gas separation. You will also interface with equipment vendors and engineering contractors to define the appropriate equipment and systems to achieve the cost effective and carbon negative product separation meeting market specification. Additionally, you will work on early-stage engineering design and assist with cost estimating in collaboration with our larger commercialization team and our scientists. You will have the opportunity to innovate, interact with diverse stakeholders, and contribute to the company’s strategic goal of providing sustainable carbon-neutral solutions that are both economical and accessible.

Responsibilities
  • Define and develop the separation systems downstream to the main production system.
  • Conceptualize the process facility based on input from the R&D team.
  • Define all the utility streams and consumables for calculating the OPEX for conducting techno-economic assessment (TEA) for the project.
  • Interface with external vendors to find the right equipment and cost for facility design.
  • Interact with R&D scientists to make sure we are designing the experiments that are relevant to our customers.
  • Engage with client’s engineering team and provide appropriate input for successful completion of the project.
  • Manage the engineering and design work undertaken by external EPC firm.
  • Conduct Techno-economic assessments to assist with understanding the value preposition of new processes developed by Cemvita’s scientists.
  • Provide process engineering, economics, and technical details for patents, papers and reports to clients.
  • Provide engineering details and calculation input to the client proposals and pitches where needed.
  • Assist in developing engineering/costing workflows and standards within the company.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of separation systems design experience and a good understanding of separation principles.
  • Working experience with design of chemical facility or refinery.
  • Good understanding of different technology options available for liquid-liquid, gas-liquid and gas-gas separation.
  • Must be able to perform the sizing calculations for different separation equipment.
  • Working experience with process modeling using Aspen, custom spreadsheets, or other simulation tools. Knowledge of project costing tools such as Aspen Process Economic Analyzer is preferred.
  • Working experience with modeling distillation column, absorber, stripper, extractor, and scrubber using Aspen plus or Hysys.
  • Good understanding of gas separation technologies including membrane systems, pressure swing absorption, amine and other solvents etc.
  • Have experience working with process optimization and integration of various separation systems in the facility to meet product specifications.
  • Has experience coordinating with vendors/contractors for equipment specification, costing, design, testing and commissioning.
  • Experience with plant conceptual design work including process simulation, heat/mass balance, utilities consumption report, BFD, PFD and equipment list.
  • General understanding of sustainable/renewable processes including carbon capture and utilization.
  • General understanding of LCA concept and methodology.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without restriction.
