General Summary
The Bronco Construction Research Center at Western Michigan University has an immediate opening for a Post-Graduate Fellow to participate in conducting research and testing related to wind uplift applied to residential and commercial structures. This position will require an interdisciplinarity focus on fatigue loading and failure analysis.
Major Duties
- Implements research projects as specified in the grant or contract proposal.
- Administers monotonic and dynamic wind uplift testing, post-test analysis and test report oversight.
- Applies appropriate quantitative, statistical, and qualitative methods for analysis and interpretation of data.
- Drafts manuscripts for submission to professional and/or scientific journals or reports to the sponsoring agency.
- Actively develops relationships with external fee-for-service clients.
- Assists in oversight of undergraduate and graduate student internships.
- May present at conferences/meetings in the relevant field.
- Participates/Administers STEM events at the K-12 level.
- Prepares funding proposals and other grants as co-principal Investigator.
- Demonstrated ability to work with students, staff, faculty and other stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctoral or terminal degree in a relevant discipline from an accredited institution, plus some relevant experience, or Master’s (or equivalent) degree, plus at least 3 years’ relevant experience. In rare instances, a Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree, plus at least 8 years’ relevant experience.
- Knowledge of the research or scholarship process, data collection, analytical and statistical methods.
- Clinical, laboratory, training or field skills appropriate to the grant or contract.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct research or scholarship independently or in a team.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient office software skills, including word-processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.
- Demonstrated interest, skills, and experiences working with diverse groups.
Desired Qualifications
- Doctoral or terminal degree in Wind Engineering or Aeronautical Engineering from an accredited institution, specialized in experimental fluid mechanics, computational wind engineering, and aerodynamics.
- Demonstrated previous experience with research and testing related to wind uplift and pressures associated with uplift.
- Two years’ experience with fatigue loading and failure analysis.
- Familiarization with videogrammetry and vision for aerospace applications.
- Experience with low-speed, closed circuit single return wind tunnel systems.
- Expertise in image-based measurements techniques for flow quantities including velocity, surface pressure, surface temperature, skin friction, surface deformation, and aerodynamic force.
- These techniques required include particle image velocimetry (PIV), global luminescent oil-film skin friction diagnostics (GLOF), optical flow method, photogrammetry, pressure and temperature sensitive paints.
- Knowledge in wind tunnel and structural mechanics testing.
- Understanding and history of working with diverse groups of stakeholders.

- The initial appointment will be for three years. Renewal of appointment will be contingent on performance and availability of funding.

Physical requirements and working conditions
- Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting/moving materials less than 25 pounds.
