We are currently seeking a Polymer Materials Engineer to join OFS Labs, our corporate R&D facility located in Somerset NJ.

The successful candidate will assist in the development and processing of materials, especially polymers, for use in novel and improved optical fibers and optical fiber devices. Specific areas include evaluation and improvement of current formulations, development of new materials, and application of polymers to fibers and devices as coatings, bonding agents and packaging material. Product applications include telecommunication and specialty fiber and cable, and fiber-based optical devices such as lasers, sensors and imaging systems.

Dominant focus is on coatings for optical fiber and includes evaluation of coating performance, development of new or modified coatings, and application of coatings during fiber processing.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Lead and execute programs in selection, development and characterization of polymers
• Evaluation of impact of polymer material and processing to optical fiber and device performance
• Evaluation and improvement of coating application during fiber draw, including assistance in fiber draw process as needed
• Establish and maintain processing and characterization facilities
• Development of methods to understand and eliminate coating defects
• Assist in establishing and executing an R&D program to support OFS manufacturing sites, including a long-term technology roadmap and participation in global OFS coating activity.
• Perform related duties in applying expertise to assist other teams across the company
• Flexibility in managing both independent work, while assisting other programs.
• Perform other related duties as required by management.

Key qualifications include:

• PhD, MS in Chemistry, Materials sciences, Chemical Engineering, or similar discipline
• Strong interest in laboratory work, experiment design and analysis, and materials processing
• Experience with analytical test and measurement equipment and statistics is required.
• Exceptional documentation and presentation skills
• Drive to work both independently and as a critical member of interdisciplinary teams
