The Facilities Services Department (FS) is committed to creating an exceptional campus physical environment to support the research, teaching, health care and community service mission of the University. FS employs over 465 professional staff/contractors and acts as steward for over $95 million in operating funds and $28 million in capital funds annually to achieve its goals in operating, maintaining, and renewing the UCSF campus environment consisting of 9 million GSF of research, clinical, administrative, and auxiliary services space. Located in the Campus Life Services organization, FS is organized into 5 distinct units: (1) Operations & Maintenance, including Custodial Services (380 FTE), (2) Engineering & Utilities (45 FTE), (3) Infrastructure & Renewal Programs (20 FTE), (4) Customer Service & Technology (15 FTE), and (5) the Office of the Assistance Vice Chancellor (7 FTE).

Under the supervision of the Trades Supervisor, the incumbent: inspects, installs, renovates, modifies, maintains, and repairs domestic hot and cold water, building piping, underground piping systems, waste lines, vacuum piping, gas lines, and compressed air lines, and interacts with other craft workers, vendors, and clients to coordinate and maintain workflow. The incumbent also inspects buildings, facilities and equipment to ascertain needed repairs and make recommendations/follow up to supervision. The incumbent may be assigned to another shift and may work mandatory overtime as required. The buildings that are serviced range from commercial/institutional-type multi-story steel-and-concrete structures to converted residences.

The individual may be assigned other related duties necessitated by departmental workload, special circumstances, or emergency. The incumbent will perform work that is on schedule, within budget, high quality, cost effective and appropriate to client needs. The incumbent will provide effective customer services ensuring that client’s needs are met regarding service, fees, schedule and budget. The incumbent must establish friendly and professional relationships with customers, and exhibit a courteous manner toward faculty, staff, students, patients and the public.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

  • 2 (two) years of experience at the operational level in an appropriate craft; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Knowledge of codes, regulations, and construction practices applicable to plumbing systems in commercial/institutional construction
  • Knowledge of proper use and maintenance of hand and power tools related to job functions
  • Ability to work in steam tunnels and pits with elevated temperatures, pipe shafts, crawl spaces, and other confined spaces requiring stooping, crawling, and bending.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations
  • Ability to work cooperatively with vendors and with University faculty and staff
  • Ability to effectively work individually or in teams as well as with diverse groups
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally, in writing or electronically
  • Ability to work effectively in a service oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities
  • Ability to follow through and carry out assignments
  • Ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to read blueprints and skill in the use of plumbing mathematics
  • Ability to plan and layout work, install or modify plumbing systems, diagnose plumbing system, fixture, and component malfunctions
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and the ability to use equipment and tools common to the plumbing trade
  • General problem solving skills and sound judgment
  • General understanding of job safety on the work site in the use of ladders and scaffolding.
  • General computer knowledge Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access)
  • Skilled in the installation of copper, steel, glass, and plastic piping

Preferred Qualifications

  • University and/or Medical Center environment experience
