Shift: Full time, Days, 40 hrs/week

Provide skilled front office and clinical support to the physician practice and serve as a liaison between the physician and patient to coordinate care. When required, provides direct patient care by working collaboratively with the care team. Functions as a member of the patient’s ambulatory care team while delivering exceptional customer service, ensuring patient safety, privacy and loyalty. Provide healthcare services under the direction of the Practice Manager and/or designee, and physicians in the NCH Medical Group.

Greet patients to the practice as they arrive at the office

Escort patients to exam rooms, providing wheelchair assistance as needed

Verify patient identity using two patient identifiers

Schedule all new and established patient visits in accordance with patient preference and physician availability

Continually review daily schedule in Epic and self-service kiosks to know who has arrived and checked in, who is scheduled to arrive, and who has not yet arrived.

Answer all incoming telephone calls to the office and handle each as appropriate, in accordance with NorthShore telephone customer service standards

Take accurate and complete messages according to protocols

Follow-up on patient issues as appropriate

Confirm/update & distribute call schedule; notify answering service, & internal on-call system, etc.

Provide timely responses to NCH MyChart messages and appointment requests & other In Basket messages
Complete prescription refills as per practice protocol

As directed, communicate test results & other information to patients via NCH MyChart or telephone

Document accurately in the EMR and adhere to patient confidentiality standards

Obtain/verify medical history, medications, allergies, reason for visit, etc.

Accurate collection and documentation of vital signs with special attention to the geriatric, neonatal and pediatric patients; prepare patients for physician visit

Utilize the standardized rooming patient protocol in EPIC to complete all required documentation fields including medical history, reason for visit, and questionnaires

Explain NCH MyChart and guide patient through NCH MyChart activation

Administer medications per physician orders

Perform EKGs, spirometry testing, and other office performed tests per physician orders and by following documented competencies

Distribute post-care direction(s) prepared by physician to patient

Assist in procedures as needed including room set up, preparation and clean up

Ensure supplies are maintained for each practitioner

Assist with obtaining prior authorizations and pre-certifications as needed

Abstract clinical information into Epic at the direction of the physician or practice manager

Ensure the cleanliness of clinical and non-clinical areas such as patient rooms and laboratory

Perform clinic inventory tracking, stocking, audit expiration dates of all patient care items

Obtain medical records from non-NCH facilities

Create and open orders per protocol or as directed by provider

Adhere to National Patient Safety Goals, Joint Commission Standards, and other regulatory and risk protocols to ensure patient safety

Follow infection control measures including performance of high level disinfection and/or sterilization when applicable.

Work jointly with management to maintain NCH Performance Improvement Standards

Document accurately in the EMR and adhere to patient confidentiality standards

Travel to other offices as needed to ensure appropriate staffing coverage

Maintain inventory of supplies and order as needed

Knowledge and application of NCH policies and procedures that apply to job and area of responsibility


Qualifications


1. High School Diploma, GED or equivalent work experience required.

2. AMT (American Medical Technologists) or AAMT (American Association of Medical Assistants) Certification Preferred.

3. Minimum 6 months experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.

4. Ability to work weekend and evening hours across multiple locations may be required.

5. Must be able to type a minimum of 25 WPM and pass basic computer skills assessment (Windows).

6. Perform multiple tasks and detailed work, problem-solve, reason and perform basic mathematical calculations/ work independently with minimal supervision; possess good organizational skills; and be able to file both alphabetically and numerically. Understanding of health insurance and insurance referrals is preferred.

7. Requires ability to speak, read and write English

8. Requires ability to sit for extended period of time, type, walk, carry and lift 20-30 lbs., reach, push, twist, pull and bend
