Definition & Essential Functions

Under general supervision, maintains City buildings so that they are a clean, sanitary, and healthy environment for public and employees' use. FLSA status: Non-Exempt.

Tasks
Performs a variety of general cleaning tasks, in accordance with Standard Operational Procedures (SOP's) adopted by the department, including vacuuming carpets, mopping floors, washing windows, dusting furniture, scrubbing tiles, and sanitizing the restroom facilities; strips, waxes, and buffs floors; de-activates and re-activates building security alarms as needed for cleaning tasks; cleans blinds, and vacuums drapes; sweeps floors, sidewalks within building perimeters, and patios; picks up litter, including cigarette butts; scrapes gum from floors and sidewalks; replenishes toilet paper, hand towels, and soap dispensers.

Cleans and dusts ceiling fans, air and heat-duct registers, ceiling and desk light fixtures, and baseboards: collects and disposes of office, bathroom, and kitchen trash into outside trash containers; dusts and waxes counters, filing cabinets, and desks; shampoos and steam cleans upholstered furniture and carpeted floors; cleans and sanitizes mirrors, drinking fountains, and door handles; cleans entrance mats and removes carpet stains; removes, washes, dries, and re-installs blinds quarterly; uses a variety of cleaning solvents. Must have the ability to lift at least 50 pounds. Works directly with the Lead Custodian in documenting completed cleaning procedures, scheduled tasks, and inventory control.

  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and on certain occasions extra hours past the 19.5 hours per week if needed at the discretion of the Facilities Supervisor.
Knowledges, Skills & Other Characteristics

Knowledge of:
MSDS sheets on cleaning solvents and chemicals.

Equipment and supplies used for cleaning work.

Proper and safe use of custodial chemicals and supplies.

Proper preventative maintenance of cleaning equipment, i.e. vacuums, floor machines, etc.

Custodial procedures and practices.


Skill in
:
Cleaning and disinfecting.

Operating wax stripper, steam cleaner, buffer, and other cleaning related equipment.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City staff and the public.

Following oral and written instructions.

Following established safety procedures and practices.

Documenting completed cleaning procedures, scheduled tasks, and inventory control.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school or GED required. Six (6) months experience in cleaning buildings, including stripping floors, shampooing rugs, and washing walls. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license required. Must be able to pass Sierra Vista Police department and ADOC background check.
