Come join our high energy team, committed to voting security, voting rights and fighting corruption, on a critical campaign for our democracy in 202 and beyond. We’re looking for someone like you to join Public Citizen’s Democracy team, to lead outreach and organizing campaigns on election security. The Democracy Campaign has been winning pro-democracy campaigns at the national, state and local level for nearly a decade, and this position is critical to victory this year.

You’ve heard that corporations have lobbyists; Public Citizen is the people’s advocate, representing the public in the halls of power on a variety of critical issues. We fight for public health and safety, champion corporate and government accountability, and campaign for fair trade, clean and safe energy, and consumer rights.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Democracy Campaign leads Public Citizen’s field work on democracy issues. We work to build grassroots campaigns to address the most urgent problems facing our democracy. Even when the problems we face feel unprecedented.

As part of the Democracy team, the organizer will work to protect the 2024 election from major disruption. The organizer will help lead our to make our elections both more secure from hackers and more accessible to all Americans, through the sweeping Freedom To Vote Act. They will also work towards more resilient elections via federal regulations and state and local targeted efforts: to improve voting system standards and to stop the tech failures that lead to long lines and people being unable to vote at all.

Public Citizen’s Democracy Campaign:

  • Led in-person days of action with 53 events in 27 states to win $425 million in election security funding, that ended up funding COVID safety and voting access in 2020.
  • Co-built a network of 500,000 people in more than 1,000 cities and towns who were ready to take the streets when Trump crossed redlines to undermine the Mueller investigation and continue work to hold Trump and his allies accountable for the actions of January 6.
  • Helped to build the Declaration For American Democracy’s grassroots campaign to support the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act (the For the People Act).
  • Helped pass resolutions in more than 800 towns and twenty-two states calling for the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United to be overturned, helping build a broad grassroots movement.
  • Built national grassroots support for Florida's 2018 Amendment 4 campaign to restore voting rights to 1.4 million returning citizens who have completed their felony sentences.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with the Democracy Co-Director in the DC office and other campaign staff to:
    • Develop and execute a strategic plan to pass election security reforms and regulations;
    • Pass election cybersecurity and funding legislation;
    • Protect elections from unsecurable internet voting through state and local legislation;
    • Positively engage with election officials, activists, security experts, elected officials and opponents.
    • Help build the nationwide movement to protect our freedom to vote and pass sweeping federal democracy legislation.
  • Maintain the Secure Our Vote coalition website, active email program and daily social media posts – and help facilitate the coalition’s calls and work;
  • Work with senior staff to find effective pathways to advocate publicly for election cybersecurity, while bolstering public trust in elections and reinforcing voting rights;
  • Work with allies to develop messaging and digital media materials, and to win buy-in on messaging and outreach campaigns to combat election disinformation;
  • Assist with Congressional advocacy and drive specific state campaigns for election security legislation and funding campaigns;
  • Organize outreach campaigns to thousands of local election officials as needed;
  • Assist in outreach to Public Citizen supporters and partners in key states to ensure political support for needed election changes, including supporting days of action;
  • Draft and/or edit outreach materials, opinion editorials, and research summaries;
  • Help manage interns as needed on your projects; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience

Skilled in working in coalitions and winning issue campaigns. We seek someone with 2 - 4 years of experience in advocacy including prior experience working within coalitions. The ideal candidate will have a record of developing relationships with public officials and winning advocacy campaigns related to voting, tech or democracy issues. Experience in elections administration or state and local politics is a plus.

Knowledge and Skills

This is a position for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment where priorities are dictated by what needs to be done to win. We seek someone with:

  • A passion for democracy, election security and voting rights
  • Experience organizing and winning advocacy campaigns at the state and/or local level;
  • Enthusiasm for or experience in working with conservative and moderate pro-democracy officials and issue advocates
  • Strong advocacy writing skills and design skills for social media and web advocacy;
  • The ability to think and act proactively and creatively, and to develop cutting-edge outreach and campaign strategies;
  • Experience helping facilitate coalitions and building up coalition campaigns, including recruiting new partners;
  • The ability to be flexible and think on their feet when campaign circumstances change to continue to focus our efforts strategically;
  • An upbeat outlook, strong attention to detail, the ability to work quickly and efficiently;
  • Organizational skills, including the ability to manage an intern team;
  • The ability to work with a range of personalities;
  • A grasp of the political process and advocacy world;
  • Policy expertise in election administration, security and/or voting rights is a plus.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Competitive salary between $61,068 to 88,365 plus a generous benefit package. This is a nine month grant contingent position. Below is a list of some of our benefits (please note that some benefits have eligibility requirements).
