Optometrist Job at Health Care Center for the Homeless

As part of its continued efforts to maintain a safe workplace for employees, Health Care Center for the Homeless dba Orange Blossom Family Health requires that all newly hired employees be fully vaccinated (as defined by the CDC) against the coronavirus by the first day of employment as a condition of employment, to the extent permitted by applicable law. Work Schedule: Part time [0.5 FTE] Days and times may vary
Position Summary: Provide quality primary vision care to the homeless & medically underserved
individuals, families, and children in Orange, Seminole, and Osceola counties. The Optometrist is expected to perform and will be evaluated in patient care technical and clinical skills; medical/clinical knowledge and judgment; interpersonal and communication skills; and professionalism.
Responsibilities & Expectations:
- Provide quality, comprehensive, and culturally sensitive primary visual care to the homeless and uninsured/underinsured population by interviewing, examining, and treating patients to meet their needs.
- Strong level of comfort working with Pediatric populations required.
- Perform patient health history and physical assessment such as: visual acuity; refraction; ocular motility; binocular vision and accommodation; ocular health assessment, and systemic health screening.
- Promote good health and prevent eye illnesses by educating patients and their families on wellness, prevention and early detection, and by providing adequate materials and resources for consent and self-empowerment.
- Review patient's visual and ocular health status in relation to his/her visual symptoms and complaints.
- Discuss with patients about their refractive correction that provides improved visual efficiency and appropriate eye protection.
- Explain to patients their available treatment options, including risks, benefits, and expected outcomes.
- Discuss with patients about the importance of compliance with the treatment prescribed & follow-up care and re-examination, particularly of those with HTN, Diabetes, and those with family history of ocular diseases. .
- Diagnose & treat eye diseases using evidence-based medicine while operating within the scope of practice & standards of the Patient-Centered Medical Home.
- Promote teamwork toward the HCCH administrators, staff, and providers (Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Behavioral Health Therapists, etc).
- Document all patient encounters (phone, verbal, email) in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Maintain confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations.
- Take an active role in the HCCH financial viability by practicing cost-effective healthcare that is medically necessary and appropriate.
- Observe and reinforce all of HCCH policies and procedures maintaining excellent medical and ethical standards.
- Serve as a positive role model showing respect, compassion, integrity and timely responsiveness to HCCH patients, colleagues, and staff.
- Assist with the coordination of the tasks and duties of the vision center coordinator.
- Educate and support the HCCH clinical and non-clinical staff when needed.
- Serve as preceptor to different professional schools (FSU, UCF, USF, UF, NSU, FAMU, Kansas City University COM, etc).
- Abide by the HCCH Provider Performance Expectation Standards.
- Fill in the necessary information required on the ‘’Lions Club RX form’’ for patient’s obtaining eyeglasses through the Lions Club: Project Right to Sight.
- Perform other departmental or agency-related duties or special projects as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer
Requirements:
Valid license to practice Optometry in the state of Florida- Eligible for Medicaid/Medicare provider status
- Knowledge of computer and use of Electronic Health Records (E.H.R.)
- Experience with public health issues related to the Health Center’s needs
