Overview:
Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:45 AM - 6:00 PM (8.5 - 9 hour shift) 30-60 minute lunch break.
Pay rate: $23.81/hr + H&W $4.18/hr
Location: Portsmouth Naval Medical Center

Responsibilities:
  • Provide a wide variety of duties to assist the optometrist/ophthalmologist as appropriate to the level of certification (i.e., COA, COT, or COMT).
  • Obtain patient histories, perform prescription verification, and maintain patient records.
  • Assist in testing patient vision. Test far and near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
  • Examine the eye, using slit lamp, for abnormalities of cornea, and anterior and posterior chambers.
  • Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
  • Measure intraocular pressure of eyes (glaucoma test).
  • Test field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and chart test results on graph paper.
  • Measure axial length of eye, using ultrasound equipment.
  • Instruct patients concerning eye care and contact lens handling
  • Undergo ocular examination to establish baseline ocular function as appropriate to the occupational laser risk associated with the position. The examination will be provided by the Government, at no cost to the Contractor.
Qualifications:
  • Degree: Certificate.
  • Education: Complete an ophthalmology technician or an optometric technician course
  • Certification: Possess and maintain current certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology or a completed a formal ophthalmic training program of the United Stated Armed Forces.
  • Experience: a minimum of 1 year of full-time (40 hours per week) experience as an Ophthalmic Technician within the preceding 3 years.
  • Provide two (2) letters of recommendation. At least one (1) of the letters must be from a practicing ophthalmologist and attest to the HCW’s clinical skills, professionalism, or specific areas of expertise. The other letters may be from physicians or medical supervisors. Reference letters must include name, title, phone number, date of reference, address and signature of the individual providing reference. Reference letters must have been written within the preceding five (5) years.
