About the Middle School Librarian PositionThe Middle School Librarian, in conjunction with the Director of Information Systems and Instructional Technology, is responsible for overseeing the effective organization and appropriate growth of the library program from grades 5 through 8.

The Librarian will teach classes on digital literacy and information skills to all grades, and will also maintain a library environment which contains a wide variety of materials in appropriate media formats to support the curriculum, invite intellectual growth and foster aesthetic appreciation in reading, listening and viewing. The Librarian will assist teachers in the use of all library resources and guide students in becoming independent, effective, lifelong users of information. This job description is meant to provide structure to the responsibilities and accountability of this position. There may be additional responsibilities that the Librarian undertakes or that are assigned as needs of students and of the school arise.

The Librarian reports to the Director of Information Systems and Instructional Technology.The responsibilities of the Lower Librarian include: Develop and maintain the middle school library collection. Work with the Library team to foster a library climate that encourages students and teachers to take full advantage of the library and its resources and to remain lifelong readers and learners.Work with teaching staff to schedule student use of the library and ensure that the library is accessible and available to all students.Plan and teach developmentally appropriate lessons and activities as part of the Digital Literacy and Technology class that all Middle School students take. Support classes who come to the library, or rely on the library resources for programming. Programs and activities may include (but are not limited to): Book TalksLiterature CirclesExpedition-related content lessonsResearch lessonsTechnology Skills InstructionProvide reference services and reading guidance to classes and individuals as requested.Collaborate with the library team to develop a library curriculum.

Plan for and instruct students in library and research methods and procedures that will lead them to: Understand library organization and locate specific books.Use age-appropriate research skills.Use technology in an age-appropriate way.Represent research and learning in a variety of formats ie, research paper, PowerPoint, childrens book.Use standard MLA citation and understand the need to cite sources and avoid plagiarism.Work with teachers to acquire print, audio-visual, and electronic resources for instructional purposes. Support teachers in developing well-stocked and well-organized classroom libraries to meet the reading levels and interests of their students.With the library team, oversee the care and sign-out of peripherals shared by students and staff such as video cameras, digital camera, and projectors. With the team, monitor the functioning of reservable library technologies and report any problems.In conjunction with the library team, provide a formal library and technology orientation each year for students and faculty detailing the use of the library, including both print and non-print materials. Conduct guided discoveries to support students in learning how to safely and purposefully use and care for library resources.In conjunction with the library team, develop library procedures and rules, incorporating input from students and staff.

Clearly explain rules and procedures to students and staff.In conjunction with the library team, develop circulation procedures. Communicate with staff, students, and parents about these procedures. Keep an accurate record of circulation and inventory. With the library assistant, regularly run overdue reports and collect fines.In conjunction with the library team, coordinate management of the library assistant.Select new library materials.

Solicit input from the library team, as well as teachers and other staff when adding to the collection. Work to build a collection in conjunction with the library team that meets the needs of all age groups, that is current, that celebrates diversity and multiculturalism, and that has resources available for learning expeditions.Prepare orders for new library books and supplies. In conjunction with the library team, establish inventory procedures and conduct an annual inventory of the collection. Weed the collection regularly.

Repair books as needed.Subscribe to appropriate periodicals for students and for professional reading.Assist the library director in preparing budget recommendations annually according to Capital Citys budget cycle. Overseeing the spending of library funds according to Board approved budget.Communicate regularly with parents about library resources and programs. Develop and promote reading initiatives with families, students and teachers.Utilize and oversee parent and community volunteers in support of the library and its programs.Meet regularly with the Library Team to provide updates and information on the library program.Support the organization, maintenance, and use of Capital Citys Teacher Book Room. Regularly make and solicit recommendations for resources.

Help to maintain an accurate inventory of resources.Participate in a summer staff development institute held the last two weeks in August.Attend and actively participate in Professional Development Time on Wednesdays from 1:45-4:15.Seek out additional opportunities for professional development that will lead to achieving personal and school-wide professional development goals.Attend and participate in school events. Capital City teachers are expected to attend at least two community meetings per year.Make visitors to the school feel welcome.
