The Medication Assistant is responsible for the safe, efficient passage, storage, distribution and discontinuation of resident’s oral and Sub Q medications (IM injections if trained through an accredited affiliation).

Under the supervision of the Nursing Services Manager, the Medication Assistant assumes responsibility for the organization, direction, and supervision of all nursing services during the shift. The Medication Assistant is responsible for the safe, efficient passage, storage, distribution and discontinuation of resident’s oral and Sub Q medications (IM injections if trained through an accredited affiliation).
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Pass medications following the 5 Rights of Medications.
- Maintain excellent customer service skills at all times by following the goals and policies of the organization in providing courteous, prompt and dependable service.
- Use positive and effective communications skills with all individuals
- Complete work in time required
- Must have the ability to remain calm under stressful conditions.
- Work when scheduled and adheres to all HCK departmental policies and procedures
- Dress professional and wears attire according to HCK policy.
- Knowledge on the safe setup of weekly medications for residents (if applicable)
- Follow customer service standards including telephone standards established by HCK policies.
- Attend scheduled mandatory in-service meetings and attend staff meetings
- Complete all on-line mandatory in-services as required
- Able to order medications for residents from pharmacy distribution warehouses and local pharmacy stores.
- Monitor residents for effectiveness of drug therapy and occurrence of adverse effects
- Document medication given or refused and why
- Notify facility manager when there is a change in resident’s condition and questions or concerns they may have.
- Follow facility Residents’ Rights Policies
- Verify accuracy of narcotic count, check emergency kit and keys
- Follow resident care plans consistently and notify Nurse Manager when changes need to be made.
- Order, receive, and store medications accurately and appropriately
- Assist Nursing Services Manager or Nurse in disposing of narcotics
- Maintain confidentiality of resident and facility information
- Consistently work cooperatively with residents, nursing staff, physicians, families, consultants, agencies and ancillary service Providers.
- Be responsible for the safety of residents
- Observe infection control procedures
- Attend Best Friends Training
- Mentor, guide and Provide direction to care staff in person-centered care using the Best Friends Approach
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED and be at least 18 years of age
- Successful completion of medication yearly competency test or be certified from an accredited school for Pharmacy Technician.
- Attend pharmacy yearly review and update in-services
- CPR Certified (or within 6 months of hire)

- Completes all mandatory in-services required
- Ability to function under stressful situations
- Able to lift 25 pounds
- Ability to tolerate walking
- Good physical condition without limitations that would prohibit bending, lifting, squatting, and climbing stairs.
- Two or more years of experience in a healthcare facility and medication administration experience is required (except in specific memory care departments)
- Experience working with elderly and memory impaired required
