We are seeking a dedicated Medical Specialist Principal for the Life Insurance Underwriting Team. This role advises the Underwriting Department on the mortality and morbidity risk of individual life insurance policies as requested, often reviewing complicated medical histories, or assessing medical testing results. Reviews USAA Life Company’s actual morbidity and mortality experience regularly to safeguard long-term mortality and morbidity experience. Provides expert medical consultation on life and health underwriting policies. Completes research on medical advancements and public health trends to ensure that risk assessment strategies are appropriate and up to date.

This position is a hybrid work type and can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX; Plano, TX; Phoenix, AZ; Charlotte, NC; Colorado Springs, CO or Tampa, FL. Hybrid roles help employees gain the best of both worlds – collaborating in-person in the office and working from home when needed to achieve focused results.

The Opportunity

What you'll do:
Interprets relevant medical literature for application to appropriate life insurance underwriting policies and guidelines.

Applies advanced medical expertise by serving as primary resource for Underwriting for the approach to medical risk assessment rules.

Guides and trains underwriters and aids in the continued advancement of our Principal Underwriters in terms of their medical risk acumen.

Serves as the primary point of contact within Underwriting for medical trends research and mortality impact assessment of major public health issues.

Advises underwriters on the proper risk assessment of applications for life insurance, with particular focus on complex medical impairments. Provides expert medical research and input to help drive sound underwriting guidelines.

Participates in special project work, particularly involving the automated review of digital health data.

Provides longevity assessment related to structure settlements as requested.

Collaborates with senior underwriting leaders and staff to establish life and health underwriting philosophy, guidelines, and procedures.

Applies expert knowledge of mortality risk management and life insurance principles.

Provides training and coaching to underwriting staff as needed.

Identifies and manages existing and emerging risks that stem from business activities and the job role.

Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.

Follows written risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for business activities.

What you have:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree. (14 years of experience without a bachelor’s degree)

10 years related experience, to include 6 years of experience working as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) with accountability for highly complex projects/initiatives with significant impact.

3 years or more working as a medical advisor in an insurance setting (life or health).

Experience collaborating with key resources and stakeholders to achieve strategic goals required. Ability to interpret electrocardiograms and stress test tracings.

Demonstrated strategy development and thought leadership with the medical field.

Leading edge knowledge and expertise in theories, techniques and/or technologies within the medical field and application in a life or health insurance operations environment.

Experience applying subject-matter expertise to produce innovative solutions for work deliverables

What sets you apart:
US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner

Previous experience working as a medical consultant/director with life and/or health insurance products within an insurance company

Familiarity with advancements in medical records technology (EHR- Electronic Health Record or EMR - Electronic Medical Records) is preferred .

What we offer:
Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $132,500 - $253,200 .

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
