What you’ll do:
Leadership & Supervision
- Responsible for the direct supervision of Staff Veterinarians and Medical Supervisors. Oversees and supervises veterinary medical staff including making recommendations for hiring and firing. Conducts disciplinary actions, performance appraisals, orientation, training and instruction for all Staff Veterinarians and Medical Supervisors
- Manage and participate in a wide variety of management – level activities including ensuring proper safety programs and procedures are in place and followed to protect the well-being of the staff, volunteers, public and the animals in the society’s care.
- Maintain good working relationships within SDHS and with other animal welfare organizations (e.g. San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition members), Adoption Partners, government officials and community groups and organizations.
- Works with Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Medical leadership team in development of new protocols for medical and surgical care of animals, as well as revision and review of old protocols.
- Assure that the medical department is focused on achieving the society’s mission; and provide direction toward the achievement of the society’s mission, philosophy, and strategy.
Clinical & Administrative
- Participate in campus rounds, medical inventory rounds, and medical case rounds. Provide daily communication with the site Campus Director as well as the CMO, informing them of pertinent issues and challenges with the medical department and animal population processing. Assist in resolving guest grievances as needed.
- Ensure humane care and proper attention is provided to all animals, including situations of restraining animals, appropriate treatments and exercise for animals.
- Collaborate with CMO and Hospital Directors of the other campuses to coordinate medical care across the organization.
- Perform medical examinations, surgeries and monitoring of the health and welfare of animals in the care of the society as well as animals from contract agencies.
- Schedule and coordinate staff Veterinarian schedule effectively. Ensure appropriate scheduling of support staff and educational visitors. Review and approve time reports including requests for time off.
- Receive sick calls and coordinate daily schedule when a medical staff member calls out. Provide emergency care and treatment when necessary, providing backup for “on-call” duty as needed.
- Maintain oversight of controlled/non-controlled drug inventory, ordering and ensure SDHS is adhering to procedures and laws.
- Collaborate with the CMO regarding the medical department budget needs.
What we’re looking for:
- DVM/VMD degree from accredited university and permanent CA veterinary license required.
- Five (5) years paid experience in the field of veterinary medicine required.
- Three (3) years professional supervisory experience in a veterinary hospital setting preferred.
- Experience with herd health and/or large populations of animals preferred.
- Experience with Shelter Buddy software a plus.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be approved by SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.
The ideal candidate will have personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the SDHS mission – you’re a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who can effectively exercise judgment in answering questions and releasing information and analyze and project consequences of decisions and/or recommendations. Prior experience with high volume surgeries and with herd health and/or large populations of animals is very helpful.
Location: Based at our Oceanside Campus.
Pay: Starting range is between $136,217 - $170,271 annually. The actual salary is determined by your related education and experience. Relocation and temporary housing negotiable.
