The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services (DBHDS) is the agency responsible for overseeing the Commonwealth’s behavioral health, substance use disorder, and developmental disability service delivery system. DBHDS is seeking a qualified and highly skilled professional to serve as Medical Director for Developmental Disability Services who is an energetic and dynamic, licensed physician with knowledge of the medical and behavior treatments of individuals with dual diagnoses of developmental disabilities and behavioral health disorders and has a passion for driving high quality services, that are prevention based, focused on early intervention, effective treatment, and recovery and rehabilitation across the lifespan. This is a Quasi-full-time position, offering a unique opportunity for work-life balance, based out of the DBHDS Central Office in Richmond, VA, and may be considered for teleworking and reports to the DBHDS Deputy Commissioner for Clinical and Quality Management. This position’s primary role is to support, expand services, and drive excellence in service delivery for individuals with developmental disabilities. The Medical Director serves in an administrative role at the system level of care, with an opportunity to integrate clinical practice. The successful candidate will be a leader for communities within the state and drive clinical innovation and solutions that are person centered, data driven, and work to help individuals live to their fullest potential in the most integrated setting that meets their needs. As Medical Director, this professional will aid in cross-disability initiatives in enhancing the behavioral system of care, serve as a clinical subject matter expert for the Commonwealth to inform and develop statewide policies for both behavioral health and developmental disabilities.
Minimum Qualifications
Active Medical license in the State of Virginia. Demonstrated knowledge of state and local community-based services and the continuum of care for individuals with behavioral health and developmental disabilities. Knowledge of quality improvement implementation, principles, and tools. Experience in providing direct care or program administration serving individuals with developmental disabilities and/or behavioral health/substance use disorders. Ability to engage stakeholders and develop strong community collaborative partners. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of a residency training program in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Board Certification in an ABMS approved specialty. Specialty certification in Psychiatry or if completed residency training or board certified in a specialty other than Psychiatry, have experience in psychiatric practice. Sub-specialty training or certification. Administrative leadership experience. Experience in utilization management.
Special Requirements
Effective July 5, 2022, all Commonwealth of VA State Employees are required to work onsite. However, this position is currently eligible for one (1) telework day a week. Additional days may be considered. Both options are at the discretion of the Supervisor.
