Mechanical Laborer 2023 Job at Norfolk Southern Corp
Mechanical Laborers (aka Fireman & Oilers) are responsible for conducting routine maintenance and service on railroad facilities and locomotives. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk long distances, and sit for extended periods of time of time; reach for tools and objects with hands and arms; climb in the back of vehicles; stoop, kneel, or crouch; in all types of weather conditions. The employee must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Fueling locomotives
- Check and replenishing oil level of locomotives
- Cleaning cabs of locomotives, including restroom facilities
- Sanding locomotives
- Operate forklifts and other equipment
- Washing locomotives
- Clean and maintain related railroad facilities
- Do other tasks as needed to ensure the proper and safe functioning of the locomotive
Skills/Abilities:
- Understand oral and written communication
- Problem solving and troubleshooting skills
- Time Management
- Soft computer skills
- Mechanical aptitude
- Ability to obtain a license (Locomotive Service Engineer) through NS-provided training.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid Driver's License

Training:
Mechanical Laborers will undergo 1 week of Mechanical Safety Orientation during their first week of employment, at the Norfolk Southern Training Center in McDonough, GA. During the training, trainees will be reimbursed for one round-trip and provided lodging and meal cards ($20/day).
Salary and Wages
- 1st year rate: $23.39 (75% of full rate)
- 2nd year rate: $24.94 (80% of full rate)
- 3rd year rate: $31.18 (100% of full rate)
Work Conditions
Working hours will include shift work over all 3 shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Shifts are assigned/awarded by seniority. The work environment is a shop and outdoor work.
