POSITION SUMMARY:
This position reports to the Maintenance Coordinator. On a daily basis, this position works under the direct supervision of the Shop Mechanic(s), supporting them with day-to-day tasks and responsibilities, including but not limited to, performing regular preventative maintenance services to include oil and filter changes, lubrication, hoses, belts, transmission fluids, coolant system, batteries, brake lines, brake adjustments, hydraulics, lights and electrical components, and engine components, greasing vehicles and heavy equipment, performing light maintenance on vehicles and equipment, power washing, organizing the shop, ordering parts and/or assisting with parts inventory, etc., and taking reasonable actions within safety and policy guidelines to carry out these responsibilities for the Company.


RESPONSIBILITIES, DUTIES & TASKS

1. Performs mechanic assistant duties to ensure that all company equipment and vehicles are repaired and preventative maintenance service is performed as needed or as per manufacturers’ schedule and OSHA / DOL requirements including required annual inspections. All services performed and parts purchased and/or outside vendor charges will be documented and filed in accordance with company procedures.
2. Ensures that all company policies, procedures and safety standards for personal safety and facility are adhered to. This includes wearing PPE, (Work Boots/Shoes (no tennis shoes), Safety Glasses, Ear Plugs, Gloves, etc.)
3. Assists and supports the Mechanics who provide repairs and maintenance on vehicles and equipment as needed.
4. Assists the Mechanics with making any necessary repairs on company vehicles and equipment, as needed.
5. Communicates with the Mechanics on a regular basis regarding status of maintenance services performed, or needing performed.
6. Assists Mechanics to ensure paperwork is turned in every day to the proper person or department
7. Provides updates to the Mechanics as to what was not repaired and/or ready for the next day's schedule, ensuring unusable units are recorded. Notify Mechanics about any negligently damaged equipment as soon as possible.
8. Ensures toolboxes, storage stalls, offices, doors, gates, and buildings are locked and secured at the end of each day (if you are the last employee to leave).
9. Ensures loaders, chippers and other engine powered equipment are greased as needed and fluids are checked and filled.
10. Alerts Mechanics if spare parts and/or inventory are needed, such as:
  • Spare tires are available or sourced as needed * Pins, hoses, filters, etc.
  • Spark plugs for small equipment * Belts for small equipment
  • Commonly used Bearings and other equipment parts * Common Fluids
11. Ensures wheel chocks are available in trucks for equipment as needed.
12. Keeps work area organized, clean and in compliance with OSHA/NFPA/EPA requirements.
13. Performs weekly check of all tire pressures and lug nuts for trucks, trailers and equipment.
14. Documents on invoices, all paid or charged purchases and what piece of equipment they were used for, additionally, equipment records will be updated to reflect parts replaced and services performed. Must ensure all warranty work or parts are not billed to Company.
15. Demonstrates good judgment and gives recommendations to reduce maintenance costs.
16. Maintains good attendance and punctuality. Provides proper notification when absent from work.
17. Raises safety issues regarding equipment/vehicles/yard and facility.
18. Demonstrates good judgment and reasoning in investigating and solving problems, respecting the confidentiality of company and personnel information.
19. Seeks guidance and direction where needed in the performance of responsibilities and duties and maintains cooperative working relationships with management, employees, vendors, suppliers, and customers.
20. Assists others as needed on maintenance or repairs of equipment and vehicles.
21. Recognizes and performs, although not directly assigned, all duties in an independent manner with minimal direction and supervision by consistently showing ability to recognize and deal with priorities. As needed, seeks guidance and direction in the performance of respon¬sibilities and duties; makes the best use of time by reporting free time and asking the Shop Mechanics for additional assignments.
22. Maintains a well-groomed professional appearance appropriate for the position and within policy guidelines.
23. Performs all other duties as directed or as needed by business operations and conditions.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in the company garage or shop, at outdoor job sites, in the company yard and around buildings. The work may involve travel to customer sites with related exposure to routine hazards such as moving machinery, vehicles, and severe weather conditions. Subject to odors, fumes and substances typically associated with mechanical work on vehicles and other diesel/gasoline equipment. Occasional to frequent exposure to burns, scrapes, abrasions, chemicals common to mechanical work and temperature changes. Some work is required for documentation, ordering parts, inventory etc. Subject to frequent interruptions and varied workloads and must possess ability to cope and deal effectively with multiple responsibilities at once and work in a busy environment. Must be able to remain calm in emergencies to prevent injuries, maintain safety and assist as needed. Position is considered lightly stressful on an occasional basis.


EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or GED preferred. Vocational or professional training for mechanic or diesel mechanic is preferred.


LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS

CDL License is a plus, Certified Diesel Mechanic is a plus, ASME is a plus; or the ability to obtain such licenses


EXPERIENCE

A minimum of 1-year hands-on experience in gas and diesel truck/equipment (heavy, light) mechanics, and small 2 cycle engine equipment repair is required.



SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
The person in this position must be able to assist the Shop Mechanics with the preventative maintenance program and emergency repair activity for the Company's equipment, vehicles and building(s). This individual must be able to operate and assist with the repair of heavy/light diesel equipment, gasoline trucks and equipment, and small 2 cycle engines. Knowledge of mechanical, light electrical and hydraulics is essential. Must be able to ensure equipment and procedures are safety/DOT compliant and adhere to safety regulations. DOT and OSHA knowledge is preferred. ASME Certification is a plus.
