Job Description
NREL’s 305-acre Flatirons Campus is the nation’s premier wind energy, water power, and grid integration research facility. Nestled south of Boulder, Colorado, and north of NREL’s main South Table Mountain campus, Flatirons sits adjacent to the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge and countless acres of open space and parks with stunning views of the Flatirons rock formations.
NREL’s water power team has an immediate opening for a full time (40 hours per week) researcher.

Marine energy technologies — including wave, tidal, ocean current, and ocean thermal — are at a critical stage of development. Several demonstration projects have shown promising results in both the U.S. and Europe, but the industry as a whole is at a relatively early-stage of technology development. The marine industry is developing new devices and planning new projects, and NREL — in collaboration with other national labs and the Department of Energy — provides support in planning these projects and collecting the data that is needed for the next iteration of technology advancement.

The successful candidate will work with a growing and motivated team of marine energy scientists, engineers, economists, and policy experts at NREL in cooperation with members of the marine energy industry. The candidate will work on multiple projects at once and be expected to contribute to scoping and executing new and existing research projects. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to a wide range of projects, and to be capable of drawing connections between the scope of those projects to improve the overall efficiency of the team’s broader marine energy R&D portfolio. The candidate should have a PhD in oceanography, marine biology, marine ecosystem science, or a related physical/natural science field.

Projects the candidate could start with include: collaborating with marine energy experts from multiple national labs, universities, and industry to identify and propose new research projects, leading the coordination of knowledge management through

and the

, managinge contracts for deploying metocean instrumentation for
marine energy resource characterization
, manage
testing of marine energy technologies and components
at the lab. Further, the ideal candidate will have the skills to build an ocean environmental science portfoliportfolio of projects to support the deployment of marine energy projects.

The candidate will work collaboratively with the marine energy team and across NREL’s broader portfolio to ensure projects are coordinated and integrated with complimentary efforts. The work will include: scoping and executing research projects, writing scientific journal articles, creating and executing project plans in collaboration with project partners; contributing to, organizing, and leading meetings; identifying and planning personnel and hardware resources to accomplish tasks; contracting with external partners for work beyond NREL’s in-house capabilities; writing project reports and documenting lessons learned; developing operator’s guides for new equipment; presenting at scientific conferences (in person or via teleconference); presenting at industry meetings and trade-shows; and working with NREL’s communications team to highlight key project outcomes.

The candidates work will primarily be funded by the DOE Water Power Technologies Office and will include travel when project objectives require it and travel constraints allow it, but much of the work will be in coordination or collaboration with industry partners.
