The Getty Research Institute seeks a Manager of Cataloging & Metadata to oversee the Library’s Published Materials unit. The work conducted by this unit’s team of 7 professionals, 1 paraprofessional, and various project and contract staff revolves around one of the world’s largest distinctive collections of published materials in myriad languages and formats related to art, architecture, and visual culture. It includes large numbers of rare, antiquarian, modern, and contemporary books, serials, auction sales catalogs, ephemera, artists’ books, and electronic resources in a wide variety of languages. The Published Materials Cataloging & Metadata unit provides metadata/cataloging for these materials and oversees the subsequent metadata transformation for various digital projects involving them. The manager works closely with other managers in Library Collection Development & Acquisitions, Special Collections Cataloging & Processing, Reference, and Information Systems, as well as with bibliographers, curators, registrars, circulation, and interlibrary loan, to coordinate the provision and further development of access and discovery of the Library’s published collections in various formats, in person and remotely, to users around the world.

The ideal candidate will have experience or knowledge relating to most aspects of published materials cataloging and metadata, including rare book cataloging, original and copy cataloging, e-resource management, emerging metadata standards, and outsourcing. They will be dedicated to upholding the unit’s current high standards and contributions to national cooperative projects while considering improvements to current workflows for added effectiveness. They will demonstrate an appreciation of the uniquely complex aspects of cataloging art-related published materials.

The Institute's activities and scholarly resources guide and sustain each other and collectively provide a unique environment for research, critical inquiry, and scholarly exchange. The Getty Library uses the Ex Libris suite of hosted products: Alma, Primo, and Rosetta.
Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Manages the Published Materials Cataloging & Metadata unit, including hiring, training, and supervising staff, interns, students, and volunteers, or overseeing the hiring and training done by others.
  • Coordinates the creation of bibliographic and authority metadata for the published collection materials according to local and national standards and oversees the contribution of records to the various programs of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (BIBCO, NACO, CONSER).
  • Assesses, maintains, improves, designs, and implements workflows and assigns work.
  • Initiates the development and documentation of policies and procedures related to the materials workflow in the unit.
  • Works closely with Getty Digital staff to develop and improve library systems and tools.
  • Oversees projects &/or staff involved with the preparation of metadata for contributions to Getty-run and external partnership projects, including but not limited to the Getty Research Portal, the Hathi Trust, Western Regional Storage Trust (WEST), and the Internet Archive
  • Monitors and communicates knowledge of trends and best practices in metadata and cataloging.
  • Participates in strategic and program planning, establishes goals and priorities, contributes to the development and documentation of policies and procedures in compliance with relevant standards.
  • Participates, advises, and represents the unit, the Library, and Getty on internal and external teams and projects.
  • Participates in and contributes to considerations of reparative work through critical cataloging and helps develops an action plan for the unit.
  • Serve as a liaison for outsourcing vendors related to cataloging activities.
  • Communicates with staff and key stakeholders with openness and transparency, ensuring that the team is clear regarding the overall unit, Library, GRI, and Getty priorities and context.
Qualifications:
  • MLIS from ALA-accredited institution
  • Additional graduate work and/or expertise in relevant subject area preferred
  • 7 years related professional experience
  • Related supervisory experience

  • Demonstrated success in managing the workflow of cataloging and/or metadata staff
  • Expert knowledge of established standards and best practices in cataloging and metadata
  • Expertise with integrated library systems, preferably Ex Libris Alma
  • Advanced knowledge of new developments in the profession
  • Demonstrated knowledge of linked data models and technologies (e.g., RDF, BIBFRAME, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to provide management in ways that center equitable and welcoming practices, team-building, and mentoring skills
