The Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts is an interdisciplinary building that houses Music, Performance, Theater, and Dance, and the Cinema Studies Departments and the Colby Arts Office. The Gordon Center’s unique spaces include the Arts Incubator, Mixdown Studio, Digital Media production space, and cinema. Reporting to the director of the arts, the building operations manager operates and safeguards the Gordon Center facilities and technical assets including supervising the use of lighting, sound, studios, and the use and maintenance of classrooms and stages for The Departments of Music, Performance, Theater, and Dance, Cinema Studies, and public areas within the Gordon Center. The manager may be called upon to care for a wide range of facility related matters and will have a general working knowledge of stage, theater, dance, music, film, and related performing arts activity. As is typical for operating a performing arts center, the manager will work with colleagues on the departmental events, performance centered pedagogy, and multifaceted service to the College. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Front-of-House and production operations

  • For departmental performances and public events – including front-line interaction with audiences, members of the campus, and broader arts communities administrative and operational oversight of initiatives for multiple Colby arts venues

Building Operations

  • Year-round management of the Gordon Center spaces (including downtime maintenance)
  • Manage departmental and non-departmental setups and teardowns, including:
  • Audience seating (risers, railings, access stairs, audience chairs)
  • A/V (including podiums, mics, confidence monitor, etc.)
  • Film screens and projectors
  • Music stands and seating for musicians
  • Recruit and train students (and guests) load-in/load-out crews
  • Field, respond, and prioritize all requests for building use according to the priority access policies and procedures

Production Assistance

  • Work with the assistant director of production to ensure that academic and special events at Gordon Center have sufficient and suitable lighting and sound systems
  • Work with the artistic planning team to set the yearly master calendar
  • Organize and supervise spaces, facilities, and equipment critical to production needs - such as instrumental repair, tuning of pianos, access to rehearsal spaces, rehearsal and concert set up and strike
  • Assist the assistant director of production to secure necessary rental or loan items (ex: lighting instruments, special speaker setups, pianos, and other instruments) in-house rep lighting, A/V, and rigging systems needed to remain in place for departmental use
  • Prevent liability on the part of the facilities by reviewing with the assistant director of production the technical riders of contracts for prospective performers to determine requirements with existing or rental lighting and sound equipment
  • Assist the assistant director of production by working with visiting artists, groups, and students (majors and non-majors) in using the arts facilities and providing them information regarding operational policies and procedures, coordinating specific requirements for technical and associated support, and advising them on staging techniques and training (ladder training)
  • Work with the assistant director of production in ensuring that the College’s arts facilities are ready for use by performing groups, students, guests, and others
  • Develop an effective and efficient staff of student technicians by recruiting and hiring qualified student workers, scheduling students and temporary staff

Security and Safety

  • Work with Gordon Center departments and programs to establish and maintain standardized health and safety protocols for everyone working in the building
  • Assure that departments other than Cinema Studies, Music, and Performance, Theater, and Dance facility users and event sponsors observe building policies, procedures, and scheduling priorities
  • Critically review proposed event logistics and determine protocols needed to ensure the safety and security of the facilities, staff, performers, and patrons
  • Enforce established use policies, including ADA, in a firm and consistent manner
  • Maintain and oversee inspections, cleanings, and repairs, including flooring needs (such as marley and a dance sub-floor)
  • Identify solutions to equipment failure
  • Contract annual systems inspections (especially rigging) according to national standards
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience
  • Minimum of three years of experience as a building manager or similar role
  • Experience with event management systems
  • Excellent project management and negotiations skills
  • Previous experience conducting contract negotiations and managing contacts
  • Experience managing project budgets, creating a production timeline, and experience managing effective teams
  • Demonstrated proactive and creative approach to problem-solving with strong decision-making and critical thinking capabilities
  • Must be able to manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent time management skills; deadline driven with proven ability to manage changing priorities
  • Must be flexible, organized, have strong attention to detail, show initiative, and have a results-driven philosophy
  • Experience managing and adhering to operating budgets and production budgets
  • Basic knowledge of theater production and entertainment technology including lighting and design, sound reinforcement and recording, video sources and projection, rigging, carpentry, properties, and stagecraft
  • Demonstrated proactive and creative approach to problem-solving with strong decision-making and critical thinking capabilities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and building codes
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, establish priorities, and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse community
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:
Duties require interactions with faculty, students, staff, and community partners. The manager works closely with the Colby Arts Office, Facilities Services, faculty department chairs, production teams (the Departments of Music, Performance, Theater, and Dance, and Cinema Studies), box office staff, and departmental academic administrators.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary. Some evenings and weekends required.
