This is an Executive classification listed in Anchorage Municipal Code (AMC) 3.30.172. In accordance with AMC 3.70.060.C1 this position is exempt from collective bargaining and in accordance with AMC 3.30.172.B7, this position is subject to appointment by the Mayor of Anchorage.
The Municipality of Anchorage seeks candidates for Waste Management Director to lead the Solid Waste Services Department. The Waste Management Director manages two separate municipal utilities, Solid Waste Disposal and Refuse Collection. Solid Waste Disposal is an enterprise activity which operates the Anchorage Regional Landfill, a Class 1 RCRA Subtitle D landfill, and transfer stations. Refuse Collection is an enterprise activity that provides refuse collection services for residential and commercial customers. The Director oversees daily operations, capital projects, and develops departmental budgets.

To be considered for this position an applicant must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver's License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire. (If an offer of employment is made, the applicant will need to produce a driving record before being hired.)
AND
An applicant must possess or be able to obtain within one (1) year of hire the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) Inspector Certification. Follow this link for more information on SWANA MOLO certification.

A High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and fourteen (14) years experience in the solid waste management field overseeing daily operations and capital projects, developing departmental budgets and at least two (2) years of supervisory experience in the field.
Holding an academic degree can substitute for experience as follows:
- Associate's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Waste Management, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science / Engineering or a closely related academic discipline can substitute for two (2) years of experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Waste Management, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science / Engineering or a closely related academic discipline can substitute for four (4) years of experience.
- Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Waste Management, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science / Engineering or a closely related academic discipline can substitute for (6) years of experience.
- Submit a cover letter summarizing your qualifications for this position.
