The Maintenance Technician works under supervision, diagnoses and makes mechanical repairs to buses and other automotive equipment.


Bus Maintenance Technician with AVL/Fare Collection System Experience

Job Summary:

The bus Maintenance Technician will troubleshoot, service, adjust, and repair specific components of the DC Circulator fleet. Shift work including nights, holidays and weekends is required. This position requires experience with CAD/AVL systems such as Clever Devices. Position also requires some experience with fare box repair, video surveillance equipment and other onboard electronic equipment.

Essential Functions / Process Responsibilities include the following:

Service and Repair of:

· Farebox’s
· CAD/AVL system
· Networking peripherals (routers, switches, access points)
· Antennas, radios, and interconnecting cables
· Experience with installation and configuration of on-board electronics
· Electronically controlled brake systems preferred
· Vehicle electrical systems preferred
· Preventive Maintenance on Vehicles preferred
· Air brake systems preferred
· Pneumatic systems preferred
· Hydraulic systems preferred
· Troubleshoot Bus HVAC preferred
· Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience:

· High school diploma or GED.
· Must have a minimum of four (4) years verifiable work-related experience in Heavy Duty Truck or Bus Mechanic Maintenance.
· Some knowledge with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
· ASE certification Preferred but not required.
· Effective oral presentation and written communication skills
· Serves as a technical resource for system troubleshooting, issue identification, and resolution coordination
· Experience in working with transit vehicle and garage environment; experience with battery electric vehicles is not required but preferred
· Experience working with all electric buses preferred but not required
· Education may substitute for up to two (2) years of required experience.
· Must have held a valid driver’s license for at least the past 3 years. The only exception is for a one-time license suspension for a No Liability Insurance citation that was less than one calendar month in duration.
· Must have a valid Driver’s License, Class A or B CDL with passenger endorsement

Driving Record

· Driving records must not reflect more than 2 moving violations, 2 at fault accidents, or 2 ”No Liability Insurance” violations in the past 5 years.
· No conviction or deferred adjudication for a serious traffic violation (i.e. DWI, driving with a suspended license, etc.) in the past seven (7) years; and no more than 2 DWI/DUI convictions in a lifetime.
· Any more than one driving safety course taken for a moving violation that appears on a five (5) year driving record will be treated as a moving violation and will count against your record. Pending actions will be counted against the driving record until proof of resolution is provided. Note: Patterns of moving violations, accidents and/or other infractions may also disqualify an applicant.

Criminal Background Record

· No conviction or deferred adjudication for a felony, or a Class A or B misdemeanor within the last seven (7) years. Convictions or deferred adjudications for Class C misdemeanors will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Convictions or deferred adjudications for a felony or misdemeanor outside the last seven (7) years will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Pre-Employment Screening

· Pass pre-employment screening (DOT physical) which includes drug and alcohol screen, physical examination and agility test, to operate CMTA vehicles.

Job Type: Full-time


  • High School or Equivalent
  • Minimum of three (3) years of journey level mechanic experience including general heavy equipment, automotive maintenance, repair work of advanced difficulty. Substantial experience in repairing heavy duty diesel equipment, especially buses, and completion of a recognized course in diesel mechanics is desired
  • Clever Device and Farebox experience required
  • A valid Commercial Driver License with P endorsement.
  • Good DMV record in accordance with agency standards.
  • Possession of necessary tools to perform above duties.
  • “A, B, C level” heavy-duty mechanic certification or equivalent trade school and apprentice experience.
  • Heavy duty spark ignited engines, diesel and gasoline engine parts, transmissions, brake systems, air conditioning systems, air/hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and related equipment.
  • Tools, precision instruments, equipment, and procedures used in the general overhaul, advanced repair, and maintenance of automotive equipment.
  • Decimals and fractions commonly related to automotive repairs, tools, and parts
  • Operate equipment used in repairing or servicing motorized equipment.
  • Diagnose malfunctions and replace parts, remove and make advanced repairs on a variety of diesel and other automotive equipment.
  • Work any shift at any agency location.
  • Follow instructions.
  • Read parts and repair manuals and keep accurate records on repairs made.
  • Utilize automated maintenance system.
