The Wisconsin DNR is hiring three LTE (Limited Term Employee) – Fisheries Technicians for locations in Bayfield and Superior, Wisconsin.
Position Summary
Fisheries Technician - Creel/Field: These positions are designed to gain a variety of fisheries experiences and will spend time conducting creel surveys and helping with field surveys on Lake Superior, Chequamegon Bay and Lake Superior Tributaries. Independently or under general supervision perform creel survey clerk duties and collect fish information on designated waters. Measure, weigh, and identify fish caught; interview anglers and record data. Activities would also include deployment of a variety of assessment gear and collection of biological data on target fish species, and accurately tabulate, enter, and summarize biological data. Additionally, the incumbent operates and maintains electrofishing gear, boats, outboard motors and other equipment. Additionally, they monitor state and tribal commercial fishing nets and provides information and education to the public through personal contacts. This individual frequently works independently without direct supervision and works cooperatively with external partners on projects as needed.
45% - Independently or under general supervision perform creel survey clerk duties and collect fish information on designated waters. Measure, weigh, and identify fish caught; Interview anglers and Record data.
45% - Conduct multiple assessments in different geographic areas simultaneously. Assist staff with conducting electrofishing, fyke net, gill net, and seining surveys. Help determine the appropriate areas to deploy gear, operates and retrieves gear and is responsible for collection of appropriate biological data as directed by the fisheries technician or biologist. Assist with data tabulation and summarization as directed.
10% - Maintenance of Office buildings, grounds, dockage/seawall and vehicles. Maintain work and storage areas, fishery equipment such as pumps, motors, boats and other related field equipment.
Salary Information
These positions pay $17.00 per hour and are in pay schedule and range 06-12. For current and eligible former State employees, compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.
Job Details
This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.
LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.
In order to be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

Qualifications
- Ability to accurately identify common Lake Superior fish to species name
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Availability and willingness to work in inclement weather
- Availability and willingness to work early morning and late evening hours according to an irregular assigned schedule
- Prior coursework or degree in fisheries
- Prior volunteer or work experience in fisheries
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
