Through generous funding from the Brooke Jackman Foundation, the Y offers family literacy programming for children ages 5-10. This program supports developing literacy skills in young learners while also fostering a lifelong love of reading. During our 2022-23 program year, we are offering Family Literacy at the Y twice weekly for children and their caregivers through a hybrid model: once weekly in-person socially distanced and once weekly over Zoom. The program is free of charge for families and includes snacks, book giveaways, interactive read-aloud, games, arts and crafts, and a quarterly showcase/special activity with a meal for the entire family.

Our Literacy Coordinator will be responsible for developing and directly facilitating the Family Literacy Program, funded by the Brooke Jackman Foundation. Our literacy-based activities are intended to engage children and their parents/caregivers in utilizing critical literacy skills. Activities should motivate children’s love for reading and learning, as well as support caregivers’ active involvement in their child’s literacy skill development.

LITERACY COORDINATOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

During program sessions:
  • Set up program space and activities.
  • Welcome and orient families/students, engaging them to further their connection with the Y.
  • Facilitate engaging and creative literacy activities.
  • Assist students and families with activity work, and support their literacy practice.
  • Encourage family members and students to interact and work together.

Outside of program time:
  • Conduct outreach for participants at local schools and organizations.
  • Maintain organized program participant attendance and registration with contact information.
  • Maintain regular communication with program participants.
  • Maintain organization of program materials and manage supplies.
  • Prepare curriculum and materials for each session making sure necessary supplies are on hand;
  • Represent the Y in recruiting and engaging families to participate in our programs;
  • Represent the Y at funder's annual events (Read-A-Thon and Gala);
  • Coordinate regular program space, and special program events at the Y (beginning of year open house/program kick-off event, bi-monthly dinners, end of year celebration);
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual year-end program summary and funding proposal for the following year.

POSITION TYPE / EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
Approximately 6 - 8 hours per week for the duration of the program (approximately 24 weeks throughout the year). This includes roughly 2 - 3 hours per week of family engagement, outreach, and lesson planning, and 3.5 hours of direct facilitation (inclusive of set-up and breakdown). More hours for planning and outreach may be required in advance of special events. The Schedule of facilitation hours are dependent upon the final program schedule.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish required.
  • At least 2 years of experience in family literacy and/or classroom literacy programming.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven commitment and demonstrated success in running high-quality literacy programming.
WORK AUTHORIZATION & CLEARANCE:
  • Documentation of U.S. citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass the background check, medical exams, fingerprinting and other requirements of the Department of Health (DOH).
  • Must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
