Position Summary
Lifeguards monitor activities and ensure the safety of swimmers at aquatic facilities, responding to emergency situations. Lifeguards participate in swimming pool/facility safety and maintenance activities.
Lifeguard (Indoor) <20 positions work 19 or fewer hours per week in an indoor Aquatics facility.
This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
Education, Training and Experience – minimum required to proficiently perform the job
Education / higher education: Should have completed High School Freshman year; if age 19 or older, must have a High School diploma or equivalent
Other requirements: Must be at least 16 years of age. Must be able to swim at least 1500 yards and tread water for several minutes (will be tested every two weeks).
Education and/or experience preferences: Prefer prior experience as a Junior Lifeguard.

Driver’s License requirement: Infrequent Driver - Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: none

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job
Knowledge: Lifeguarding and lifesaving techniques and procedures.
Skills: To identify hazards, unsafe behaviors, and swimmers in distress and properly address each situation, preserving life and safety.
Abilities: Ability to lift items up to 49 pounds frequently.
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Will interact with other City staff, taking direction and providing information; will interact with facility patrons and swimmers, providing direction, guidance, instruction and enforcing rules and regulations.
Authorities and Accountabilities
Level of independent decision making: Minimal-incumbent primarily carries-out instructions and follows established procedures
Budgetary/Financial/Asset accountability: Low - Position is accountable to a Department Director or Division Manager and cannot make major decisions or obligate the City
Span of control: Responsibility for own work (no supervision or leadership expectations)

Essential Functions
The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Performs lifeguarding and instructional duties, warning swimmers of improper activities and hazards. Responds to emergencies, rescuing persons in distress or in danger of drowning; provides rescue breathing, CPR, AED or First Aid.
- Follows and enforces rules and regulations, maintaining facility order and safety. Notifies management of accidents, rescues or problems.
- Assists in facility and pool safety and maintenance activities, including grounds, lobby, bathrooms and party room. Monitors facility, including bathrooms and locker rooms, for cleanliness and supply needs. Conducts tests to determine water qualify. Maintains/completes chemical logs, hourly count logs and periodic/special reports as requested.
- Maintains up-to-date rescue knowledge, skills, abilities and procedures in the aquatic industry.
- Provides swim instruction to swim lesson participants at all swim levels. Plans and prepared curriculum for swim lessons.
- Responds to questions asked by pool users.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Daily activity level: Frequently required to sit, kneel, stand, stop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects; walk or rove around the pool.
Physical characteristics: Moderate to strenuous physical activity; ability lift items in excess of 49 pounds occasionally. Requires frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling and depth perception to help with the recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or unsafe behaviors. Required to wear City of Rio Rancho uniforms, swimsuits and use provided safety equipment.

Extraordinary working conditions: May work in an outside environment that is subject to quick changes in environment, including rain, thunder/lightening, and hail. Bare feet; slippery surfaces; possible exposures to blood-borne pathogens
Hazardous equipment/machinery used: Ladders; diving boards;
Required personal protective equipment: Must keep lifesaving gear closely available at all times when guarding the pool area
