Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse - Dialysis

The Dialysis Nurses are responsible for overseeing dialysis treatments required by patients suffering from acute or chronic kidney failure as ordered by physicians.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Working Under the Direction of the Dialysis Registered Nurse, The Licensed Practical/Vocational Dialysis Nurse is responsible for:

  • Checking and recording patients’ vitals before, during, and after dialysis treatment.
  • Primes dialyzer and bloodlines.
  • Ensuring that hemodialysis treatments are administered to patients correctly in accordance with physician orders.
  • Monitoring patients during dialysis treatment and identify/respond to any adverse reactions.
  • Oversees the dialysis treatment from start to finish.
  • Cannulates accesses and provides CVC care per hospital policy and procedure.
  • Secures, analyzes, and reports lab work.
  • Assist in preparing and updating nursing care plans.
  • Promptly notifying the appropriate medical practitioner of any problems that occur during dialysis treatments.
  • Ensure that dialysis machines and equipment are set up/cleaned according to hospital policy and procedure.
  • Draw and analyzed water and dialysate cultures and LALs; Draw AAMI product water samples
  • Weekly disinfection of the hemodialysis equipment
  • Assist hospital material manager in placing supply orders
  • Reinforce education to dialysis patients on treatment options, kidney disease management, as well as suitable nutrition and exercise regimens.
  • Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting and within the scope of practice per the State Board of Nursing

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Training:

  • State license to practice nursing.
  • Certification through the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC) is encouraged but not required.
  • Proven experience working as a Dialysis Nurse.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Experience: Three (3) months of hemodialysis experience required; One year dialysis experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and observation skills.
  • The ability to operate dialysis machines.
  • The ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Patient and compassionate
