Job Description


SUMMARY

The Manager, Laboratory Minerals manages production, distribution and marketing operations at laboratory in the US Minerals Branch location. Has full responsibilities for employees, equipment and samples testing. Sets daily goals and monitors achievement. Ensures efficient use of materials and instruments.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Manages production, distribution and marketing operations at laboratory in the US Minerals Branch location.
  • Has full responsibilities for employees, equipment and samples testing.
  • Full supervisory responsibility of both direct and indirect reports: hiring (interviewing, selection), planning work, scheduling, performance evaluations, performance management and termination.
  • Performs annual performance evaluations of direct reports, and indirect reports, as applicable.
  • Schedules laboratory personnel as needed to ensure that all samples are properly received, identified, prepared, and analyzed in a timely manner, according to established work procedures.
  • Schedules work flow through the department so that client deadlines are met in a timely fashion; monitors throughput and performance.
  • Determines the priority status of all samples in each day’s lab batch and ensure the expedited processing of samples to meet client’s requirements.
  • Trains all new laboratory technicians and reinforce their training with copies of applicable ASTM, or other current standards being used to prepare samples.
  • Ensures each person within their responsibility has undergone an orientation and has sufficient knowledge for their safety and health while at work.
  • Ensures that each person has sufficient information, resources and materials to do their job safely.
  • Develops and maintains maintenance schedules for all equipment located in the laboratory.
  • Responsible for purchasing laboratory equipment and supplies. A written list of all items required developed and reviewed with the Branch Manager prior to purchase. These lists should be reviewed periodically for content and effectiveness.
  • Develops plans for efficient use of materials, instruments, and employees.
  • Oversees and monitors production costs and product quality, and modifies production and inventory control programs to maintain and enhance profitable operations of SGS’s branch office;
  • Reviews operations of competing organizations and plans and directs sales program(s) to develop new markets.
  • Reviews data as it applies to operations and quality control daily and updates all quality control logs and charts as required.
  • Develops an electronic and physical storage system where all laboratory worksheets, notebooks, tablets, and other paperwork or files can be stored to comply with company Records Retention schedule.
  • Assists the Branch Manager in enforcing all safety rules and regulations for designated locations as it applies to all employees, contractors and visitors.
  • Participates in monthly operations meetings to review and update procedures, to discuss existing or potential problems and their resolution, to reinforce safety rules, and clarify details of the work schedules.
  • Ensures that all calibrations, standardizations, and equipment maintenance are performed at the specified times, that they are in accordance with SGS procedures and specifications, and the results of these tests are recorded in logs as required.
  • Instructs all new employees on the confidentiality aspects of analytical reports and information and perform periodic reviews.
  • May also have preparation or field responsibilities, as required by business needs.
  • Fills in for Branch Manager or Assistant Branch Manager, as required
  • Adheres to internal standards, policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Associate degree
  • 3-5 years working in Industrial or Laboratory or Field settings
  • 1+ years of supervisory experience

OR equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, or Related field
  • 5+ years working in industrial or Laboratory or Field setting with experience following strict safety standards, including 1+ years of supervisory experience


LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS

  • Have or be able to obtain MSHA 24-hour Miner Certification if required
  • A valid and current Driver’s license may be required if the role requires driving a company vehicle.
  • May be required to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card)

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

  • Language Skills: English – Advanced level of proficiency preferred
  • Mathematical Skills: Basic level of skills required, Advanced preferred
  • Reasoning Skills/Abilities: Advanced level required
  • Computer Skills: MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint – Intermediate level user proficiency required

TRAVEL

  • Local day travel up to 5% may be required; may be required to travel overnight occasionally.


EQUIPMENT

  • Familiarity with equipment used by front line employees; routinely uses sample prep equipment including Jaw Crusher, Bowl & Disc Pulverizing Mills, Pressure Filters, Riffle Splitters, Compressed Air.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment/instruments including Bottle-top Dispensers, Eppendorf Pipettes, Balances, Muffle Furnace, Sulfur Analyzer, Compressed gases, ICP-OES, and Flame AA.

Work Schedule:

  • Routinely Business hours are Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, however some locations have 24/7 operations and require a willingness to work a flexible schedule.
  • Longer hours, evenings and/or weekend work will be necessary occasionally/frequently as job duties demand
  • Position requires occasional overtime.
  • You may be expected to report anytime day or night should the job require.
