Overall Purpose and Objective of Position

This position performs daily laboratory tests of production samples for a dry mill ethanol plant to ensure the quality of the final product.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Performs daily laboratory tests of production samples to ensure the quality of the final product, and enters data into electronic data system
  • Follows quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of test results
  • Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to.
  • Assists the Laboratory Manager with the inventory and ordering supplies to ensure efficient laboratory operations
  • Supports the Safety and Environmental Compliance Specialist as directed by supervisor

Additional Responsibilities

  • Ensures work area is kept clean and free from safety hazards which requires regular bending and occasional bending and lifting
  • Completes tasks as assigned by the Laboratory Manager and Plant Manager

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses

High School diploma/GED

Associates and/or Bachelor’s of Science degree, preferably in microbiology, biology or chemistry preferred

Experience

With Associates degree: 4 years of experience in laboratory operations and/or maintaining quality control in an industrial or municipal facility or in an agribusiness plant

With bachelor’s degree: 2 years of experience in laboratory operations and/or maintaining quality control in an industrial or municipal facility or in an agribusiness plant

Experience within an ethanol plant is highly desirable

Relevant experience may include testing of soil samples or wastewater

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

The following are required:

  • Broad knowledge of laboratory processes, procedures and equipment
  • Broad knowledge of quality assurance testing methods
  • Knowledge of Process Safety Management preferred
  • Knowledge of manufacturing regulatory and safety requirements (e.g., OSHA, EPA, BATF, and NDEQ) preferred
  • Knowledge of ISO 9000 or BQ-9000 preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as withstand extended periods of walking and standing; move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more which requires regular bending and lifting.

Standard laboratory equipment and machinery (e.g., HPLCs, moisture balances, pH machines, NIR machines)

Typical office equipment: PC, telephone, fax machine

Wears proper personal protective equipment (PPEs) when required

Working Conditions

Continuous 24/7 plant operation; this position works 8-12 hours/day on day shift, including alternating weekends and holidays. Laboratory work is conducted in a typical climate-controlled environment. Periodic visits to industrial operations areas are necessary with exposure to a variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions; exposure to gases, vapors, dust and odors; and exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise. Personal protective equipment (PPEs) will be worn in compliance with Company standards and government regulations as required. Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects or to respond to emergencies.

Pay: From $20.00 per hour
