Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Procures properly labeled sample from the patient (inpatient or outpatient)
  • Maintains PPE during collection, processing, and testing.
  • Prepares written documentation as required by the department for laboratory testing or patient care information.
  • Processes electronic and paper orders for laboratory services.
  • Coordinates and routes specimens to proper area of laboratory.
  • Determines sample acceptability
  • Properly labels specimens
  • Properly centrifuges specimens
  • Loads the specimens on the appropriate analyzer for testing • Performs CLIA waived testing as indicated
  • Collaborates and is in communication with the Tech for that shift/call period to ensure the timely release of patient test results.
  • Performs various office functions: o Answering telephones o Making and distributing photocopies

o Filing and maintaining all clinical laboratory files

o Calling for maintenance

o Assists the lead LA with billing

  • Orders necessary supplies for clerical and phlebotomy needs and receives requested stock items and distributes them to the appropriate place within the laboratory.
  • Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work area and furnishings.
  • Maintains department records, reports and files as required.
  • Performs phlebotomy functions as directed by functions of the laboratory.
  • Uses and collects specimens as directed and takes them to the laboratory for analysis, using appropriate PPE precautions or collecting and handling specimens.
  • Logs specimen into Cerner LIS system.
  • Performs cleaning duties including high level disinfection and sterilization of medical and surgical instrumentation as necessary.
  • Performs courier duties when necessary.
  • Performs employer ordered urine drug screen collection per DLS procedure
  • Maintains inventory within the laboratory.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served.
  • Enhances professional growth and development and maintains skills and knowledge through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-services, and workshops.
  • Complies with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures, safety program requirements, corporate compliance program standards of conduct, all applicable statutes, rules and regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Physical Demands:
  • Required to stand, walk and sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Continuous handling, fingering and eye-hand-foot coordination.
  • Constant use of depth perception corrected and color vision.
  • High levels of attention to detail, concentration, alertness needed, with frequent use of mathematical ability.
  • Exposure to infection from disease-bearing specimens, to odorous chemicals and specimens.
  • Subject to electrical hazards.

  • Ability to handle emergency or crisis situations.
  • High levels of attention to detail, concentration, alertness needed, with frequent use of mathematical ability.

Communication Demands:

  • Communicate directly, clearly and effectively with staff, vendors and contractors.
  • Be approachable; relate well to others; be receptive to feedback and articulate clearly.
  • Actively listens and get clarification to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner. Skills/Knowledge:
  • Previous experience with waived testing.

Education/Training:

  • High school graduate with some college experiences

.Experience:

  • Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Clerical experience in healthcare setting desired.
